Do vets over prescribe?

After recently losing my old mare I was left with a box and a half of her medication, which the vets won't take back - I understand that they wouldn't take the half box back, but the unopened box i couldn't see why not. However, it seems that some vets will and others won't. Does this depend on what the medication is or just on the vets policy?

I got a box of unopened gastrogard which they won't have back and was pretty expensive to leave to collect dust on the shelf but it's not needed. They prescribed me a course but when they re-scoped and found him to be fine they said to ween him off them by reducing the amount but i still have 7 shringes left.

I wouldn't want a vet coming out constantly to re-prescribe but do they prescribe too much? It's not just the waste of unused medication but also un-neccesary expense which I'm sure we could all do without!

So do they over-prescribe?

If they can't get your money by always coming out and writing repeat prescriptions, they will get your money by over prescribing :)

It's interesting that they won't take the medicine back though. Even if its not to resell it, don't they have a duty to properly dispose of unused medicines and waste?

Law states you cannot resuse returned medicines. The vet's would easily take them from you to dispose of but they won't refund.
Equally people moan about only getting small amounts at a time and having to go to collect more. Especially if it's a fair drive to the vets.
Can't win really.
