Do you come from a 'horsey' background?

If YES to Q1 - how many foals have you bred?

No I don't really.

My eldest sister had some riding lessons which were free from my dad's work, and then my next sister went too. Neither of them were all that keen. When I was 10 I asked to go too, but really only because they had been and it wasn't fair if I didn't get to go too! However, I am the one that really got into it and had my own pony then a horse, and now I have Manni and my daughter shares him and has Toby too.

I did find out recently that my paternal grandad used to ride racehorses for exercise - I don't know why I never knew this before!

I don't come from a horsey background. My mum is terified of them and my dad just didn't like them. I grew up in London and for ages i thought only policemen where alowed horses or the queens gard.

When i was 11 we moved to high wycombe and the countryside was only a short walk away this was when i discovered horses. I helped at the local riding school in the hope of getting free lessons. (My parents could not afford to pay). Then i was hooked. When i was 14 my dad got made redundant and my parents said they would buy me a pony with some of the money. Then it was lucky my parents didn't know anything about horses as they would never have bought me Lucy if they did.

No - 'Our Sort' didn't 'do' horses.... just like 'our type' didn't do ballet - but DID do Scottish Dancing......

My parents were extremely 'social class' bound when I was a kid. Dad was very 'Old Labour' and horses/ballet were considered not for the like of us.

However, When I got a job of my own.......

Not at all. No-one in my family is horsey. I`ve had horses for over 20 yrs and always done it on my own. I can sometimes rope my husband in to help but not very often. Luckily my 14yr old son comes to get them in with me at tea-times and the shows.

Yes. Aunt has had a riding school/livery as long as I've been alive and earlier generations always has horses about the farms for riding/competeing etc. On the other side my relations breed and show Irish Drafts.

My great aunt used to ride alot. My dad rode along with his brothers and sisters as a youngster.
My mum rode a little as a youngster, but neither of them had ridden in many years before they purchased our horses.
I was the one who rode, broke and trained them, and many of my friends used to come up to ride over the years.
My parents did alot of basic handling and care with them but I was the one who rode them all really, I got them on board a few times but it was rare.

So its mostly no, but a bit yes, as they bought them for me and helped care for them but never rode. They did love horses and always dreamt of breeding friesians many moons ago, but as I grew up and moved into town we slowly sold them off, i still have one of our original horses 18yrs later.

Bet your glad I answered now

Yes, my Mum had horses when I was a kid (still owns Badger the Fjord). My sister (_Gina_) also has a horse. Mum’s cousin was in the mounted police.

Now I would have called that a 'yes'.

Your parents and aunt rode, they helped with buying, handling and care - so I would say that was a 'horsey background'.

Grandad worked on a farm with horses
His Sister's husband still breeds horses to drive, has never not had horses
My mum and her sister had ponies as children
My mums brother sold the foal they bred, he wasnt interested
There cousin had ponies, and now his daughters do (my cousins)
Most of my distant cousins have had horses or ridden

My dad, brother and sister are not interested at all.
However my uncles wife rides, and her sister owns a stud
His daughter has horses

My OH is a showjumper, and used to work at redwings, his sister works there and has a horse too....

so yes i do indeed lol

My paternal grandfather was in the cavalry in WWI - well I'm assuming he was as I've seen a photo of him in militqary garb on a horse!

Both parents were born and raised on farms in the days when they used horses for ploughing and had a pony/cob to drive a trap wherever ...

You'd never know it tho' neither of them showed the slightest interest in horses when I was a kid - I had to buy my first pony myself from my "life savings", and bought my new horse from my adult life savings...

A cousin on my mother's side started breeding horses a few years ago as a sideline to his dairy farm.

My niece was interested in horses but has "grown out" of it now.

Nope - not at all

My dad always dreamed of having a horse, as did I. Dad had a rocking horse that he would forever drag out of the flat to "graze" on his estate when he was a kid and passed the rocking horse onto me when I was little. I used to tend to that and my Sindy horse "Smokey", which I built a little stable for!

My horse, however, was bought on a whim for my mum (because her new friend had one!) and subsequently lost interest after a couple of weeks (after buying him, we found that he had been buted up, hence why he was so quiet) when he became an absolute nut-case

And that is the story on how I ended up with a horse
grin.gif

Nope! Family are golf fanatics!! I dont fit in seeing as when I see a golf course I think what an amazing cross country course you could build on it!
tongue.gif

Always been horse mad along with my sister and we had a couple of lessons as young kids so my dad assumed we could ride and got us a pony on loan from a farmer friend of his! We couldn't ride for toffee and the pony was half wild with a mind of his own- his stable was in the corner of the field and when he got fed up gandering round with us he would make a run for the stable! The family who owned him took him back for their son to ride and it was back to the riding school for us for a couple of months until my dad decided to buy us our own ponies to keep us happy.
To be honest I wouldnt have it any other way- we had great fun with the ponies growing up with no parent intervention!

My parents really only got the horses because of me, I am not sure they would have bought them and kept them if it weren't for me and my love of horses

Mostly yes if you like then

Nope altho apparently my great grandparents owned a farm but after that none of the family were very country til me. Mumnow goes for lessons as she wants to get into it and dad helps me a lot and tows for me but has no desire to get on or anything.

In fact my family are so unhorsey that when I bought my gag for dentistry (it was the first thing I bought) my dad used to make me get it out to show friends and family that came over! 'Show 'em that thing u bought that looks like a torture tool'.

my aunt had a farm and her daughter had a pony, but no one else in my family were interested. the first time i sat on my cousins pony, i was about 3 or 4, and that was that, i can still remember it today!! (some 30 yrs later) my parents let me hve riding lessons from the age of 10, and i ended up going to college to study horse management and then worked with them for a while. but i never had my own till 2 yrs ago. and funnily enough, my parents dont know anything about it, coz they'd totally freak! i'm a single mum you see and its seen as wrong and irresponsible for me to spend money on anything like that. they tutted at me for starting riding again 4 yrs ago, so when i made the decision to buy, i also made thd decision to keep quiet, for an easier life. altho its been 2 yrs, i'm always paranoid the kids will say something one day and drop me in it! and when my dad decided to join facebook, i had to hide all my horse photos and comments from him!!

Yes, sort of...
My gran was (and still is) very horsey, had five of her own did horse rangers etc, etc. Her parents werent really horsey but they had the money for her to do it. Her sister used to ride but gave up and pretty much hates anything to do with horses now. When my gran met my grandfather she sold all her horses to stay and look after the children. My mum is sort of horsey and used to ride but gave up in her early teens after an accident. Her brothers (my uncles) have no intrest in horses and neither to their wives. Up until last year I was the only horsey granchild but now my 6 year old cousin has started having lessons and has already started nagging for her own pony much to her parents disgust
tongue.gif

My family on my dad's side have no intrest in horses as far as I know, the only one that showed some intrest was my grandmother before she died as she used to have the odd ride on her friends ponies before she left ireland.
ETS my mum doesnt really get involved with my pony i've always seen it as my horse, my responsibility so she just pays the bills, takes me to the yard and usually fills a haynet for me with doing full care very occasionaly if im having to see father's family or i'm really ill lol.

No! But somewhere along the line have managed to convince my Mum to learn to look after horses and she now keeps my retired horse and 3 minis at home!

Nope, i started riding when i was twelve after about 5 years of my parents saying no, then two years later my mum decided riding was actualy amazing! and started
laugh.gif
Turned out a good thing as two years after she relised how fun having our own horse would be and we got buzz!
laugh.gif

No, farming livestock had old kds ponies and when they died asked if \i wanted another and opted for a few show cattle instead whch i halter trained but a 18 months they were sold for beef and banked a cheque, then wouldn't have horse until got myown farm so after recovered from cancer bought a horse at 41 now just got a 5yr old as well now i can afford them.

Hmmm, sort of... 2 of my aunties had horses when they were younger and my cousin used to ride. My Dad used to plod about on a big coloured called Boris that bolted with everyone else (I think the only reason he didn't with Dad is that he made the mistake of bolting on a disused aerodrome and Dad made him go round twice more before he would let him stop - he never tried with Dad after that though my aunties wouldn't go near him as he'd be off!) But this was all before I was born and they had given up by the time I came along.

None of my grandparents were horsey, neither is my Mum - she'll pat Taffy gingerly over the door from time to time but that's about it. Dad has ridden out with me a couple times over the years but he's not really into it any more though is always happy to help when they come and visit - he's a dab hand with a poo scoop :-)

My Grandparents on my Dads side had horses, although they came into it later in life and used to ride for pleasure themselves but had a couple of younger women to ride their horses show jumping and across country! (My Nan even had a book about her life with horses published after she was retired) So I was introduced at a very young age and always made sure I had my trousers on and wellies in the car when we went there for a visit lol! Unfortunately for me though they emigrated to Canada to retire (My Grandad was Canadian by birth) and they sold their horses. So I went cold turkey for several years untill I eventually convinced my Mum that I really wanted to learn to ride properly and she took me to my first riding school. However, I never managed to convince them to buy me a pony of my own. My Dad had seen enough of the so called downsides when he lived at home and would never be convinced. So I waited patiently untill the time was right and finally at the ripe old age of 35 bought my own! (And My Dad still thinks I'm an idiot and won't even come down to meet George.) Not really sure if that's a yes or a no lol!

Yup - mother used to ride and also breed horses but with advancing years has now given up riding and switched to breeding smaller riding ponies and section Bs.

No - farming stock again, my parents figured ponies would keep me away from trouble! So they got me a cute Dartmoor when I was 6 and I have been hooked ever since!

Nope. My mum had a few lesson a s a child, but until I actually took myself down to the local riding school after saving for weeks, they didn't want to know. Now 9 years later I have 5 horses, and a donkey, Mum rides my 2 quiet ones, and Dad is cheif poo picker, and photographer!

I put no as its mostly no....although mum had a horse and I therefore had ponies from a very young age, but the family is definately not horsey other than that! For as long as I can remember we have always had horses/ponies for me, a few at a time for some reason given that after a while it was only me doing the riding! But mum was very into showing the welshies in hand and bred a couple of foals.
