I've been sharing for the past 12 months. My first share started this time last year, lovely horses, lovely owners. This lasted 6 months (best 6 months of my horsey life!) but sadly, due to various reasons this ended. I then found another horse to share. This horse was lovely to start with but then turned into a complete psycho. Around a month later started sharing another horse but this one started to get extremely dangerous on the roads so i had to end it. Then 4 weeks ago i took on a friends horse on full loan. this horse has always been perfect in everyway but again, started to become dangerous on roads and to handle so i had no choice but to end the loan. I've gon back to looking to share. thought i found one and was meant to be going to view it today but the owner cancelled at the owner cancelled at the last minute. At this point i'm really tempted to sell all my riding gear and just give up on something that has been part of my life for 14years.

Sorry so long. Needed to get that off my chest.

Hot choc and cookies for getting this far!

when you say psycho and dangerous on the roads what are the horses doing?
4 weeks isn't long to have a horse really - they all test you out at one point or another and 4 weeks is around about the time they really start to get to know you and work out who is boss out of the horse/rider.

ahh bless dont give you the right horse is out there for you.
where bouts are you from, I have a 15.2 that Im looking for smeone to loan/share.
The guy who had him is moving to belgium and I cant afford to keep 3 horses

sorry back to your post, My mare is being a right stoppy one at the moment sooooo bad that I cant even ride her out anymore, she is verging on psycho but I have just put it down to lots of haylage and limited turn out, I was considering selling her but rode yesterday in menage and she was amazing,

please dont sell up just yet keep riding even if it means a few riding school horses to get your confidence back

((((hugs))))

I would agree that the horses have probably just been testing you out. Most horses will 'try it on' with a new rider, to see what they can get away with. Provided that rider is consistent and confident, they will quickly learn that you are not to be messed with. Even my first loan horse, a bombproof 20 yr old ex-riding school cob was a swine for the first few months! I would expect it to take up to 6 months to really bond with a new horse and get the best out of it.
Don't give up, you just need to give it a bit of time. Maybe with the next horse you loan, could you ask the owner or an instructor to give you lessons for the first few months? That way you can iron out any initial problems before they develop into something more dangerous.

I agree with the other posters - it sounds like they were just testing you and by not resolving it may have knocked your confidence? Not sure, just my opinion.

I went to view a horse today that picks up on owners nerves alot so he wasn't right for her but is suitable for me as I am more confident. Maybe have some lessons with new owner and that way they'll tell you if the horse is trying it on or not.

Good luck.

The horse that i loaned wasn't trying it on. I've been riding her for her owner for the past 2years on and off so she knows me very well. We got past the testing stage. Same with the other 2. I'm a lot more confident riding since first share and take no crap from them. I'm not prepared to put up with horses spinning in road, tanking off with me on board and bronco-ing along.

Absolutely, you shouldn't put up with anything dangerous esp on the roads.

But, am I the only one thinking it could possibly be something you are doing subconsciously that is causing three horses in a row to become psycho and/or dangerous when they haven't been before?
On the other hand you could just have been terribly unlucky and got 3 horses in a row that were wrong for you.

I know you are down and I don't for one second think you should give up, but you have to ask these questions so you can make sure it doesn't happen again.
