Do you ever let your horse eat whole apples?

Well my horse takes bites out of apples if I hold a whole one in my hand

(like a human).

I tried once but he couldn't quite work it out, bless him! So now I have a corer and it cuts it up for him into baby pieces

it also lasts a little longer!

I try not to let her, but she always nabs the whole thing off me because she takes such a large chunk. She either sprays bits out everywhere or takes the whole thing all in one!

Is it not normal to give them a whole apple...

Ours have very small mouths so do bite it up, they can't fit one anywhere near their gobs whole.

No, far too afraid of him swallowing more than he could cope with. Also, what with dodgy teeth myself the thought gives me the shudders!!

Andy does this too, usually takes 3 bites to finish an apple..

Mine knows the word bite so ill hold it out, tell him to bite then he does. It usually goes in 3 bites.

Would never give him a whole apple to eat at once, i think thats asking for trouble IMO

Yes. Usually they take a bite. I try and hold onto it so they take a bite but it doesn't always happen so sometimes they nab the whole thing and i watch while they struggle to eat it and dribble half of it out again!

Mine have access to an orchard to graze but pick the apples off the trees - and the pears, peaches and plums.

Yep.

Normal horse takes a chunk out of the offerered apple first, before snaffling the whole lots next bite.

Weird horse scoffs the whole thing in one go, shoving the whole lot in her mouth. She can't bite it once it's in her mouth, and refuses to give it back, so she sucks it until it gives.

I know she does it, so always offer them in halfs. But a friend offered a whole apple half way around a long hack (all 15miles of it). She shoved the whole lot in as quickly as possible (bitless bridle) then spent the next two hours sucking it on the way home. When it gave she suddendely started to foan green all over the place. Silly horse.

Victor eats it in bits if you hold it out, but if its going in his feed I either stamp on it to break it up or put it in whole and make sure I watch him whilst hes eating.
I put whole carrots in his feed because they are really small at the place I buy them.

Yesterday, I tried to make ponio take a bite, I know he can, but he snatched the whole thing before he realised he couldn't manage, so he put it to the front of his mouth, then opened his teeth, Pushed the apple inbetween with his tounge and bit it in half, but stuck his head in the air so that none of it fell out, it all just stayed in his gob, it wasn't a big apple but still took him ages to finish it!

hehe, silly boy.

Arwen - mine eat bananas too! and oranges. Really funny with the banana though, they think they have to give it a good bite, like a carrot, but their teeth bang together as its so soft! really funny when they do that.

H too!!! So I just call him a pig and giggle at him in his frustration

No, not on their own. Like most other people I'll offer a whole one if I'm holding it and can ensure they take a small bite rather than the whole thing into their mouth in one go.

no never not even a whole carrot either.

The reason is a previous riding school I attended had a horse choke to death on a whole carrot that had somehow become lodged in their windpipe.

It's not worth your horses life if it goes down the wrong way.

I sometimes feed a whole apple but make sure he bites it into pieces before swallowing (if not I pull the whole apple out of his mouth!)

It is better for me to do what I normally do - stamp on the apple, it then breaks up and I can feed it in pieces.
I was always told it was VERY bad to feed an apple whole because of the risk of choke.

I feed whole apples, he never takes a bite, the whole apple disappears in one go!! He gets quite affronted if I do chop it up, he takes a really big bite to take it into his mouth, and is very disappointed if all that space isnt taken up

I remember being at one livery yard years ago, where the very doddery and elderly owner used to come round with a whole apple for the whole yard and cut them some paper thin slices off as a 'treat'. I wont tell you what he thought of that...
