i went to see a stunning tb x wb mare last year, and after thinking long and hard about it, i decided to keep flint and not buy willow. im still in contact with the owner (a really genuine lady) and she is now jumping newcomers and is competing BD...and it got me thinking how well we would of done if i had of bought her

I do, and the horse I didn't buy is being advrertised again. I decided to buy clementine and the foal, I'll pretend it wasn't the foal that made me buy her but it did have the aww factor

. The mare I didn't buy was nervous and needed work (though had loads of talent and good breeding), I kinda figure now its best I didn't buy her as I already have one nervous wreck of a horse and didn't need another. Clementines turning out really nice now (fifth ride and first solo hack yesterday

I love her!) so I don't regret it but I do sometimes wonder, what if?

I have only turned down 2 horses to date. One I dont regret as it was never destined to become much. The other one I do wonder how its doing now as Im sure it is jumping massive BSJA now, but it was too small for me and a rip-off so nothing I could do about that!

There is another horse I think of - I saw 2 horses for sale at a local stud. By the time I got there a few days later 1 had been sold. I bought the 1 left luckily and he's been absolutely brilliant so its not like I regret buying him and not having a chance of the other one AT all. But I just wonder where Id be now competition-wise if Id ended up buying the other one!

I've only thought about one, a beautiful 13hh pony. We had him on trial for 2 weeks when I was 7. He chucked me off 3 times in one lesson infront of my dad and he refused to buy him (probably the right thing for a dad to say!) The pony went on to win his SHP class at HOYS and took supreme championships all over the place including BSPS champs with an older jockey. I think I was just 3 or 4 years too young for him.

If I've been allowed to buy horses I have done, and they stay with me for life. My mum wouldn't let me buy a lovely WB last year because she was never been hot shod and she said at 16hh she was too big (!), I was absolutely gutted at the time because I got on so well with her, but if I had got her I would never have got Flash, who is my horse of a lifetime!

About 10 years ago I was offered a 14.2hh for £1000 that had been owned by a friend. I absolutely adored him but dad wouldn't let me have a horse. 2 years later he was advertised for £10,000 having turned out to be an absolute superstar!

Yes i do ... 6 years ago i went overseas on holiday for a few months and was given a TB to ride, he was wonderful, and gave me back all the confidence i'd lost with a previous horse, and i thought i was destined to forever ride "safe plods" for the rest of my days, he changed all that for me.. he was an ex-racer, having been off the track only 6 months previous.i rode him alot and we got on so well...i had the opportunity to bring him back overseas with me and stupidly money ruled over my heart and i left him there and he was sold on..... i've regretted it ever since.

Yes, last night in fact, I was thinking about the horses I inquired about in my hunt for Bel, and I felt terribly smug, safe in the knowledge that I found the right one

I think about the horses I didn't buy and the horses that I had to sell.

I am sure they are all much better off without me though

Same as Puppy, I think about how glad I am I didn't buy any of the first nine! Eight of them were totally not right for me, one we nearly had vetted but with hindsight I can see that there's no way she was only 10 (looked coming up to 20) and there's no way the guy was genuine (he was nice enough but there was something wrong, and he said he had a passport for her but his ex-wife wouldn't give it to him as they didn't speak any more...)
And then I think about the horses I DID buy, how it was so easy as I just knew she was the one, I got on with her from day one, thought she was fab even though she was a pot-bellied, ribby, unfit, un-talented horse, and how she's progressed into a superstar (a lame one at that!)
I really hope she comes right and I don't have to go through it all again!!

Yes there was a mare I tried on the same day that I tried Splodge - but she was a boring bay and not very exciting, though she had a huge jump and I honestly think I should have bought her instead of Splodgey, as much as I adored him! Retrospect is a really annoying thing LOL!

Boring bay?! Weezy I'm shocked to the chore!!!

I've never turned down a horse either (only actually bought 2, the others, including PF were freebies) but I've thought about a mare I sold (boring bay!) that I couldn't sell for ages, and eventually virtually gave away.... she's doing very well eventing now.

yes, i fell in love with a grade C palamino gelding called monty, i had 1st refusal on him but decided not to buy him because of his age (was 13ish) he's now been sold and is back jumping bsja and i really wish id bought him

Yes I saw so many before we got pickle but the one that has really stuck is an American thoroughbred called solitaire (solly for short) , he was 16.3hh and had just a lovely jump on him could have definitely gone far, didn't buy him in the end because when YO tried him he bucked despite not doing that once when I rode him (rode him twice in all paces and hacking)
