Do you feed additional vitamin E with micronised linseed?

I started feeding my horse micronised linseed as part of a diet overhaul in about November to try and improve his hoof quality. He has about 100g a day. It's obviously too soon to say if it's helping his hooves or not but his coat is certainly very shiny.

Anyway, we all know that if feeding lots of oil we should add additional vitamin E, but I was reading something last night that suggested if feeding micronised linseed we should give extra vitamin E too, presumably due to the high levels of oil in that. I hadn't really thought of that before.

My lad has a balancer that has a suitable general vitamin E level but it's got me wondering now should I be adding more? I should add that he doesn't have any specific conditions that make me think he needs more for health purposes.

So I just wondered if anybody who is a regular feeder of linseed does add more vitamin E or am I worrying over nothing?

And while I'm asking, do you all continue to feed the linseed over summer or does the grass do its job then?

Thanks.

I wouldn't worry. 100g of linseed does not contain a huge amount of oil in the grand scheme of things, and I wouldn't worry about feeding extra Vit E to support/compensate for a high-oil diet. It does contain the "good" kinds of omega 3 fatty acids though, so that's a good thing. In fact, 100g of linseed supply a similar amount of omega 3 as a horse grazing fresh grass might get in a day (that's an estimate, of course), so by no means a high-oil diet.
I think the extra Vit E is more relevant for people whose horses have some form of PSSM and are feeding oil by the cupful.

As above, if the horse has free access to fresh grass, he should be getting both omega 3 fatty acids and Vit E from that. But if you need to restrict grazing e.g. to keep weight in check, it might still be worth to feed that cup of linseed and supplement Vit E (as part of a general balancer), just in case.
