Do you feed meat ?

Strange question ! But ours get meat and mixer biscuits and our old vet would tell us off as apparently feeding meat causes teeth issues. Since we have moved to a new vets they have said nothing on this and complimented us on the weight of both the JRT and our GSP !

Can meat really cause damage to teeth ?
 
Yes raw and with bone! Have to say I would be questioning any vet who told me not to feed meat to a dog! Think he probably meant a purely tinned meat diet could cause teeth issues as there is nothing to crunch on!

Ooo have toyed with that and led to the squits :o she is really picky and has the worse stomach ! He knew she was on mixer not just a big slob of meat lol. Her teeth at 5 are not bad :)
 
If it ain't broke don't fix it! Mine could clear an entire street with his arse in kibble- on raw not so much as a whisper!!!
 
Mine are raw fed although big dog is on Wainwrights trays cos he's started refusing raw. I can't imagine anything more boring than plain kibble!

Just check that the food is good quality and doesn't contain nasties. This is a good starting point:

Avoid Pedigree, Wagg, Bakers, Chappie kibble, all contain potential carcinogens.

I suspect as lexie says the vet was referring to tinned meat as they mentioned teeth issues. I know vets do have issues with feeding bones, my daughter is very twitchy about them as she has done a few surgeries on dogs with obstructions after raw bones, but raw flesh, particularly if its big enough for them to tear at , should be good for teeth.
 
My 3 are raw fed and all have good coats and, touch wood, seem fit and healthy, and certainly very active. They eat fruit and veg as well as meat, we enjoy a variety of meals, so why shouldn't our dogs? Their poo is solid enough to pick up with a tissue if needed, and I never get any nasty smells emanating from the dogs!!! They get the occasional bone which helps to keep their teeth and gums healthy. I use Nature's Diet, Prize Choice Freeflow Mince and sometimes, Wainwrights. They also get a couple of garlic pills every day.
 
I feed raw meat, chunks of meat, minced meat, meaty bones, all of it! Mine are happy and all have their favourites and types that they refuse to eat!

One of mine is going through a phase where he will only eat frozen meat. Can anyone think of any potential problems health wise with this?
 
Yup, wainwrights trays and kibble. I'm toying with the idea of buying a bag of Nature's something? frozen chicken wings/legs as a treat dinner every so often. He doesn't do well on meaty butcher bones as the marrow goes straight through him and onto my carpet, I'm hoping puny chicken bones wouldn't have such an effect?

Feeding carbohydrate causes teeth issues, NOT meat! Dogs are primarily carnivores, without meat they would simply not thrive. Complete foods, kibble etc. etc., contain meat - whereas I disagree strongly with feeding kibble to dogs, at least it does contain meat. Any vet that says a dog should not eat meat needs to go back to veterinary college !

Nope! Mals and huskies up in the frozen north live on frozen meat - and bones too I guess.
