I have been feeding Simple Systems Timothy Chop for some years, just before Christmas I opened a bag and it was totally different to what it usually looks like in texture and colour,
I contacted SS as it was a soft texture and green (More like Readigrass colour) which concerned me

Anyway I sent a couple of samples and they kindly sent it away for Analysis, if you open your Timothy Chop and think that looks good enough for me to eat do not worry the sugar levels are much lower than in the courser usual type, all their Timothy Chop once stocks are cleared will be the soft stuff

Mine aren't dentally challenged which I should imagine was a problem with the other courser type so I was more concerned with the sugar content

They have sent me a full Analysis which I am more than happy with

How the world has changed, when I was a child we filled our pockets up with sugar cubes to feed the ponies now I'm asking for an Analysis on a Chop :)

I had the most horrendous experience after feeding SS feed to two of my horses. I wouldn't use their feeds if you paid me.

What were the sugar levels? I'm always interested in low levels and I like Simple Systems stuff

The sugar level in the courser Timothy chop (From the stalky part) is 10.6
The new softer taken from the leaf is 4.88
They also run
Protein Fibre Oil Ash Starch and DE (Digestible Energy) and sent the results ~ DE is almost identical in both course and softer

Mine thrive on it and never looked better but are only on the chop and miniscule amounts of simply complete, I have never tried any of their other products apart from a bucket of salt for the field shelter. You should share your experience as others may have experienced the same thing

I'm surprised about that; I'd always thought that stalky grass was 'safer' ie had more fibre and less sugar

Yes same here, I knew that they batch tested but when I opened the bag it looked so soft and greenish, I hate change when things are working well
As I say they asked me to send in 2 samples (1 course and 1 soft) and agreed to run an analysis on both single samples
I was happily surprised by the results, after so many years of using it as I was wondering what I should use if the results were not good

They seemed extremely thorough and didn't withold the results and sent me both copies, mine have always liked the courser variety and liked the softer chop
just as much so I shall stick with it

All the chop supplied from the new supplier (Softer with better sugar level results) is available direct from the main store, if you purchase from a retailer the courser type may be sold to you as they will use up their stocks before the new stocks arrive in

If in doubt give them a ring or Email them to make sure you receive exactly which chop you wish to buy as in texture and sugar levels

I'm interested to know why? I can only think your horse doesn't get on with Alfalfa?
My horses were fine on Dodson and Horrell alfalfa and are fine on it now. The size of the SS pellets and nuts and the research I have read over the last 2 years has convinced me that the size of the nut and pellets and the coarseness of the feed was causing the damage around the pyloric region. There is research to support this. . The quantity they recommend for a big horse - with hindsight- is not only ridiculous but irresponsible. As far as I am concerned their feed made my horses so ill they were nearly put down.
