Do you feel responsible for your horse?

Like for example someone is riding/trying out/ sharing your horse and falls off or is hurt. Providing you explained that horse is USUALLY 100% but not always, should you feel guilty about it?

Basically, does your horses behaviour sometimes make you feel guilty even though horses are horses?!

Has anyone ever fell off your horse, did you feel the need to really apologise

I felt really bad at the yard today. There's an ex-racer that's been kicked out in the field (in the hock) and a really HW cob that's also got a hock injury (looks like a bad scratch), but heard the two owners talking (I was in the tack room, they were in the yard) about the likely suspects of the kick, saying it was probably my horse (he's the boss!).

They weren't in ANY WAY blaming me but I felt really bad, as if it was Jazz, then the vet's been out, given antibiotics, anti inflammatories etc etc and cost lots of money and they haven't been able to ride for ages.

I know that horses will be horses, and that accidents happen, and if she didn't want her horse injured then she possibly shouldn't turn it out with others etc etc but I feel really guilty!

i let livery try Benson to which i said " AT UR OWN RISK" and they have seen how excitable/spooky he gets he fell off as Benson felt him unbalanced and dropped his shoulder (didn't buck/rear) just put rider off balance. i felt completely guilty about it as he hit his face of railings of sand school and cut his face he was fine and got back on but i couldn't relax as i was worried he was really hurt/guilty my horse had done it

he was chucked off another liveries horse day before poor sod lol

I dont ever let anyone ride my horse but me, and to tell the truth I am iffy about letting anyone other than myself, my mum or my OH even handle her - I guess I'm just very possessive

But there was an occasion at our last yard where I asked a lady to turn Elz out for me one day as they'd had to be kept in for the field to be topped...and when I got back, I found that Ellie had allegedly gone ballistic in the gateway and trampled the lady to the ground

Of course, I felt awful as it was my horse that had hurt her (although I was somewhat confused as she has never done the same thing to me nor anyone else - if she was 'naughty' I'd never have dreamed of asking anyone to handle her). Ellie was then branded as 'dangerous' at the yard which, if I am honest gave me a good excuse to ban anyone else from ever bringing her in

Well the story is that a lady who is friends with another livery has been thinking of regulally riding my usually safe sendible horse. I rode first and he was a star, popped a couple of jumps etc. I decided to let her have a go in school, she was okay and then me normally well behaved lad jumped about 5 foot in the air and shot forward. Lady fell off and has sprained a wrist and abit of a sore head.

I explained he is normally okay but i couldnt guarentee it as he is a horse, but why do i feel so so guilty about it like i pushed her too far or something!! He has never ever done this with me in 5 years!
I feel guilty on behalf of my lad and feel like this lady thought i was lying to her or something!

Yes and no. My horse can be 100% with beginners, but if he thinks you know what you are doing he will test you. But some people (me included) have electric knickers and can produce some unexpected results from even the ploddiest of equines. But if someone falls off my boy it is usually 99% their fault - and it has been in the times I have come off him myself. I have no qualms about letting others ride him, as he does enjoy it, and he also enjoys putting riders in their place if the do something like try and jab him in the mouth, or haul him into an un-natural outline.
That I guess is why I am taking him off to do working livery.

Yes. When Ari was at my friend's farm waiting to come home he jumped the fence and, while messing about, which all turned nasty, kicked out at friend's horse laying his pastern open. Cue vet visits etc. I felt terrible, even though it wasn't anybodies fault.

MizElz - I'm with you here, I hate other people riding my horses. I only let OH ride FB because it would be totally unfair not to. Friend with farm wants to ride both FB and Ari and I keep putting him off as he is one of this people with an 'electric bum' and I don't like the way he gets horses all hepped up.

I never ever allow anyone else to ride my horse, she's quirky and only used to me and my instructor, I don't know what it is nowdays everyone seems to be on someone elses horse. I never want to ride someone elses, I'm happy with my own.

But in a general way YES I am totally responsible for my own horse.

Yes, my youngster has recently started chasing dogs in his field. I feel really bad about it but there is absolutely nothing i can do

(technically they shouldn't really be in the field in the first place!)

Is any horse actually 100% ?, I know you feel bad, and soo would I but I think riding is like the bristish weather ( or at least keep telling my self this
smile.gif
), if you relied on good days you would never ride
