the joint needs to be central in the mouth or it may act on the side of the tongue, so you need the correct size. Youy do tend to need a 1/4 inch play with a loose ring as another poster said in order that the rings don't pinch the sides of the mouth.

1. Don't go for a single jointed bit... EVER

why?
If its because you worry that they are not the most comfortable bit, try telling my mare that
She was ridden in one when I got her and I thought that a double joint would be much nicer. I bought her an expensive Sprenger, she hated it
So I tried a Myler comfort snaffle, she hated it
, a Neue Schule double joint, No, she wouldn't have it, a French link, not a chance! So I tried a single joint (JP so the middle has a curve and doesn't pinch) and she said "ahhh, thank god, finally a bit I like"
Because I like to spoil her, I moved her to a Neue Schule Demky Anky single joint, which is essentially a JP bit with a copper type mouthpiece, but she really doesn't mind!
The moral of the story - Never say never and let the horse tell you
Agree - lovely friend has just given me a JP loose ring that didn't fit her lad - she had to persuade me to try it as I 'don't like' single jointed bits... horse loves it. Am just packing up the Myler Comfort doobry thing (£68) to send back as I won't be buying. Highly recommend the JP's now
