And does it make a difference if straw or shavings?

Just being nosy really - most people I know do.
I sometimes do, sometimes don't (depending on how much straw I have

My foalie has banks as she rolls about next to the wall, but I often don't use them and have never had a horse get cast.

I sometimes do, but harmony isnt known to get cast, but my friends horses do, and they have banks with straw, and at my riding intsructors yard, she uses shavings! so no differance really.

Yes, I have rubber mats and a thin cover of shavings, but i do have shavings banks - none of mine have ever been cast or seemed like they needed them but i have always banked stables just in case

i bank shavings, straw, easy bed anything id rather be safe than sorry because although you horse may have never got cast before theres always a chance that they might, so like everything else in life you try to prevent it.

Hi

No i have strips of wood around my stables, saves a fortune on straw and time mucking out. Mine have never got cast but if i had one that did i would put banks and the strips of wood.

I don't have straw banks for Flynn, he always lies down and rolls most evenings when I take his rug of, but won't if there is banks, as the stables quite small and they make it look even smaller!!! Hes never been cast though (touch wood!). So don't really bother for any of them (except if known to have, or there a bit precious!)

My foal seems to slide down the wall when she goes for a roll and dismantles the banks. Looks like mum didn't teach her how to roll in the stable. It is rather funny looking.

I use the banks for clean shavings during the week to freshen the bed up as they only get shavings on a Saturday. I was told to use banks incase they got cast and my gelding as reputation of getting cast in his old stables.

If you use shavings or easibed, surely you have to use a massive amount of that to have banks big enough to stop casting?

I haven't used banks lately, having got very thick rubber matting, but I was on easibed (aquamax) up to now. Not using enough seems to make the horse so much more dirty though.

I am about to go back over to shavings, but I doubt I'll have enough in there to bank properly, just enough to cover the fetlocks.

I dont understand what you mean about the wood

I use straw and have massive banks, about 3ft high. My horse doesn't roll around much but I would rather be safe than sorry. The same way as some people put boots on their horse to prevent damage, others don't bother.

The wood is about 3ft from the floor, so that the horse if gets cast can leaver against to help him upright himself. Its the same idea as anti cast strips but cheaper.

Yep I do (on straw) it helps keep the draughts out and I'd rather be safe than sorry as my boy does tend to lie down, sometimes flat out next to the wall.I also think that it makes it look more cosy!

Do u mean at like an angle in place of the banks? I often wondered why they dont just do that to be honest. I would do that - but beau only gets little banks anyway as he doesnt roll in his stable.

Not really. I put 2 bales of shavings in a week - he is on semi deep litter.

TBH I'm not sure how much good banks do in preventing a horse getting cast. I knew a pony that had Huuuuge banks in its stable and still managed to get cast.

My stable does have banks but only little ones - just to help keep the drafts out really

reading this post makes me think of terrible puns about putting depoists in shavings banks

No.

If I put banks up in Jim's stable that were big enough to be useful he'd have hardly enough room to turn around! I don't see the point in the small banks most people put up so I just do a flat bed.

Little Un doesn't get banks simply because the first thing he does is dig them down. There's something very depressing about putting a pony into a lovely stable with huge banks only to watch him send them flying all over the place - he literally tries to climb into them then starts digging away with a front leg until all the banks are gone & the middle of the box looks like a mountain range
