Do you?
I usually do, have a navy with skin straps which i use for ridden showing, but this is a bit bulky when showing in hand and also have a very old beagler hat but i don't think this looks very nice

So do you have to wear on or is it alright not to?

Showing my yearling I wear the same hat as I do for ridden classes.

On the rare occassion I run Genie in-hand I wear the hat in the picture below.

I would always wear one for showing because even if your horse behaves you cannot gaurantee the behaviour of others in the ring. I also think it is considered impolite to the judge not too.

I believe you don't have to wear a hard hat - I've shown horses in a hat similar to the one in pantomimtime's picture however for my young (ok - 5!) fell pony who can be a little unpredictable I wear my riding hat, not that I think realistically he could get his feet as high as my head but more because if I ended up on the floor I don't trust his clodhopping feet to miss me!

Disclaimer: me and said pony have attended 3 shows so far, all for in-hand classes and we have remained attached and upright on all occasions! :D

ok, i am showing a 2year old connemara, who is always an angel, but as you say can't rely on others to be as good!

might just keep on wearing my beagler and stop thinking it looks wierd!! :o

I would always wear a hat with my youngster. With an older, calmer horse I probably still would due to the other horses in the ring!!!

I always have (as have been under 16!) and will continue to as you never know what a horse can do, or even someone else's horse for that matter!

Wear a hat or a hard hat? Some sort of hat is a good idea, it finishes off an outfit. Men wear a tweed cap for instance.

As for a hard hat in a young horse class - good idea!

I always wear my beagler for inhand showing - a strapped hat doesn't look the same at all.

Some welshy handlers don't wear a hat - although that is soley Welsh. In a sport horse class you would look very out of place without a hat.

If its 'continental style' when you wear whites, then I don't wear a hat.

I wear my riding hat - it's not very correct, as it's black velvet with a strap, but I think it looks neater than going without a hat at all. One day I will buy a proper inhand showing hat, when I have some spare money floating around!
