Just out of interest following on from farrier hitting horse thread.

Who just ties their horse up when farrier comes or do you or some one else always hold your horse while the farrier visits?

I always hold my horses when the farrier visits

when i worked at the yard none of the liveries came to take care of anything like that, even when the vet was called i think only one owner actually came and she just disappeared into the tack room for a coffee leaving me and the vet to hibiscrub and stitch her horses wound.

it used to be me holding the horses, or one of the other girls.

Ours all tie up, even the two year olds. The YO or his wife are usually around in case of any probs - but the farrier is an old friend of theirs and very good with the horses.

When I had my mare on another yard, I was usually there for the farrier's visit, cos I used a different farrier to everyone else, but my mare was always tied up. Maybe we've been lucky with farriers or just that they've been introduced to having their feet handled and trimmed from an early age.

If I am there, I will hold her but if not, she is tied up.
I bought her off the farrier and he is more than happy with her manners :).

I'm there, but they are just tied up. They stand nice and still. Usually I pop away for a moment or two and get us both a cup of tea, but I am always there other than for that.

I tie him up with a haylage net (regardless of the season - no harm in having some haylage once every 2 months and it means he doesn't get bored and start fidgeting!).
I used to stand right next to him, but I find this actually makes him worse as he is trying to get my attention, so I do something within his sight, like sweeping the yard or cleaning tack,.

I currently hold my horse, once she is 100% I'll tie her up so I can get on with other things.

With old ponies that were super for the farrier the farrier would often arrive, get them out, tie them up and do them by himself. We'd leave a cheque pinned to the stable door!
I think it's fair to say we trust our farrier!

My farrier just comes and gets my boy out his stable and does him. He would ring me if there were any problems. I work full time and when I booked time off for my previous farrier he never turned up on time, or not at all!! As I have to have time off for hospital apps and blood tests I feel its a bit unfair for farrier apps aswell. If the farier is late now it doesn't matter!!

Depends, some I hold, some are just tied, some just stand there. If I am putting horses out or bringing more in then my farrier just ties up and gets on with it.

The stallion is always held as he is a lazy arse and unless you are reminding him to keep his head off the floor and his eyes open he'll fall over. Several of the rescue mares are quite nervous (obviously had a hammering at some stage) and need to be babied, fortunately Kris is excellent and is very sympathetic with them.

It is very rare that owners come down when horses are being shod, and even if they do only one of them holds her own horse, it is always me, but then as the farrier says, most of the horses know me a lot better than they know their owners.

Talking of making a cuppa, my gorgeous, gorgeous farrier often brings ME a coffee from Timmies if he is passing one on the way in!

Mine are tied up.
My mare needs to be NOT LOOKED AT - she's good as gold for the farrier .... unless she sees me watching. Then she turns into a thug. I always thought she was just a fidgit, but then left her + farrier alone one to day to get something and when I got back he said she's been a million times better behaved. So now I leave them and just watch from a distance and pop in to discuss feet every now and then!

I hold my coblet as he's still learning the whole farrier thing but once I'm sure he's 100% fine with him, I'll tie him up and leave farrier to get on with it.

Hold mine. Bring her up from stable to our front door, farrier takes rope, I go and get water & make tea but frequently come back to find he has flicked the rope over her neck and is taking her shoes off. As long as she can stand & see what is going on up the lane she's happy.

I have to hold Axel or he bites the farrier! He even tried to pin him against the wall once and kick him :(
I really don't know why but for some reason he hates my farrier and yet you couldn't ask for a nicer, quieter man! He has certainly never hit him, although Axel did get a smack for trying to kick him that time.

Ours are often trimmed in the field where they stand! The old boy will stand still so long as he has a headcollar on, so I can leave him and the farrier to their own devices whilst I hold two babies and try to prevent them 'tasting' the farriers back or bum!

If they come in to be trimmed, Harley goes in the stable and again gets trimmed loose, and the youngsters go in the barn together, again I hold them.

My last gelding just stood sleeping in the middle of his stable when he was getting shod :p no headcollar or anything lol my farrier even let his wee son hold him for him sometimes, not that he needed to be held :D New 3/4yr old is a bit difficult with the feet lifting business so i hold her as it wouldnt be safe to leave her unattended or tied up!! On the vet aspect of things im always there to hold my horse.

I go down when the farrier comes. Don't do a lot as both of mine are a doddle with him - yard girls will have ensured both have been left in so all I do is lead out, tie up and natter for a bit! I hung around first time my girl had shoes put back on after 3 years or so (unshod on loan) and she showed me up by going to sleep..!

I expect all of mine to stand up and behave for the blacksmith. Like hell I'm going to 'hold' them for such a basic requirement. Bugger that, I have better things to do and my blacksmith/s are more than capable. I have never in all my life heard of so many 'nonce' equines, could it be the 'owners' fault or is it a genetic breakdown which is causing all of these 'terriblle' probs?

My horse is tied up, never even crossed my mine to hold them when getting shod. She will stand up quite happily and is better behaved if she is tied up.

Why do people hold their horse for their farrier? Surely a horse should be behaved to just stand their while its feet are done

My current horse used to be fine being left for the farrier but since my old farrier hit him with a rasp for what was a minor offence (dog ran out of the stable and spooked him) he now has to be held as he now has major issues with men - whether it be the vet,new farrier,o/h etc grrrrr :( He is getting better every time and my new farrier is fab with him so hopefully we will get back to noholding as I miss my tea and doughnuts that go with my farrier visits :D The little tb that I sold still has feet issues so he is held as he is sedated and fights it so its easier for him to held than him slowely removing the stable around him :)
