Following on from my post re friends horses trapped in shelter I just wondered if anyone leaves contact phone numbers on their field gate? I never did when I rented my previous field and stabling, although the neighbouring house knew how to contact me. Just thinking how many horses in fields we pass each day that we have no idea who they belong to in an emergency.

Yes I used to. My field was halfway up a mountain but right beside a footpath and Walkers always stopped to talk to the ponies so I reckned that if there was something wrong at least they might have a chance of contacting me. The only phone call I ever got was from an RSPCA Officer telling me that my horses had been reported for neglect and that he'd been up there and had his time wasted by a bunch of do-gooders and that my horses were just fine. Stupid vindictive people, why didn't they phone me if they were concerned?

.....it was the usual scenario, back to the wind, head down in the pouring rain........."look at me I'm starving" thing.

There are pro's and cons but I think the pro's far outweigh the cons and in an emergency could be life saving.

Not on the field gate, but we are away from any roads so it would only be one of us going in there. However they laughed at me when I put it up but I have a big printed list on my stable wall is my number, hubby's number, home number, work number, vets number and insurance number - me paranoid? - YES I am!

I really thought about it and was going to paint my number on his rug. But as its a small priv yard of ermm me, in the middle of no where i had to relise i would be putting myself in danager giving out my numbers, when it scares me enough up there in dark with the footpaths etc etc...

But forget to say around me the landowner and family friend neighbour might be about, my house is just infront, the lady with catery next door knows me, car garge men know me, all fields around know me and would help my horse if needed, etc etc...
