Do you leave your dog(s) outside shops?

Just curious, as there always seems to be a dog or dogs tied to the barriers outside my local coop. Usually the same ones, I have got to know them, and they me!

Just wondered as I would never leave my dog outside anywhere, I would be far too scared to. These people are in the shop for a long time, the dog is there when I go in to do my shop, and still there when I come out.

But clearly, noone "appropriates" them, so am I being over cautious? Just remember that story about the old man leaving his collie and some scum throwing it off a high bridge

No I hate leaving mine outside shops and only do it at our local post office where its so small that where he i tied i just take one step in the door and the desk area is right there.

I have on occasion taken him to the local coop (which is fairly small) and had him come inside the door and sit and stay by the newspapers while i grab what i need.

The girls in there love it and try their hardest to distract him and get him to come over to them but he has learned to glue his bottom to the floor until i say.

It depends on the dog. If absolutely necessary (and if the visit was v.quick) I would leave Peanuts or Beezle as I think most people would be quite scared of approaching a large dog who is tied up.

However I would never, ever leave Florimell as she is way too cute and she is so tiny and she could be so easily stolen

No i wouldn't because if anyone tried to stroke him he would bite them. Hes not very keen on strangers

I wouldn't need to worry about anyone taking him though

No i don't - too worried they'd be nicked - quite sure it's in their rescue contracts that we aren't allowed to anyway (lurchers).

No, mainly because we don't really live near a shop we could walk to, the only shop I could walk to without being flattened by a speeding car is the Garden Centre and they allow dogs in.
Although, even if we did I wouldn't, I see lots of B&W Springers on Missing/Stolen posters and I would be heartbroken if it happened to us. Otto is too friendly and would go with anyone!

Nope. I used to with our old girl but I wouldn't do it anymore.

Apart from the risk of theft, while my dogs are good with people, I know a lot of people wouldn't appreciate walking past a tied-up German Shepherd to enter a shop so I don't want to give anybody who dislikes or is scared of the breed anything more to complain/worry about!

I don't have to. Dogs are welcome in all shops in NYC, minus grocery stores.

If she wasn't permitted, I would never leave Stella tied up outside. She is far too friendly with strangers, and she would quite happily go off with whomever was trying to steal her.

Yup....not for any length of time, if I'm going into town alone and know I'm going to go into shops he's not welcome in then I don't take him. However, if I'm in town and need to pop into the supermarket mum works in for instance then yes I leave him tied outside or just inside the doors. I only take him into town if all I plan on doing is pop to the bank/pet shop etc....places where he's allowed in. I'm lucky my favourite pub in town welcomes dogs

NOT ON YOUR LIFE......my dogs are never out of my sight, I would be panick stricken if I returned from shop to see my dog gone

and I know my whippets and lurchers would be stolen in a flash.........I only leave them in my doggy van which has blacked out windows when they are guarded by my rotti or akita

Never under any circumstances - if I'm outside the home then they are always within sight! The risk of opportunistic theft is just too great, even in small village.

I do outside the Spar in NI, as I'm usually only in for an ice lolly

and can see her the whole time. Haven't done so here, as it's too busy in town and she'd probably get squished by grannies in their scooters.

No never! I know of 2 people who have had lurchers taken from out side a local shop in different areas. God could you imagine coming out to find your dog gone

It's just not worth it

No, but I have frequently left a horse outside, often parked next to a Mennonite buggy, our local store has hitching rails.

I don't think I have ever seen any dog tied/left outside a store in town, lots in the beds of pickups, but no-one is going to steal something that threatens to chew your head off if you go within touching distance of their truck

My dogs have never been tied up in their lives and would have forty fits, firstly if I tied them, and secondly if I went out of sight. Apart from going to the Vets all three of them have never even been off the property, and unless we move they never will.
