Do you of you not trim your horses/ponies?

Oh haha I thought you were talking hooves!
I dont trim out shetland! other than that its all neat but i too leave whiskers on, My horses are out at night and one has only sight in one eye so i figure they might help him out!

I pull my horse's mane and tail, and trim his tail; that is all though. And of course he gets clipped in the winter. Fortunately he isn't especially hairy!

No I bl@@dy well don't!!! Horses have tails, forelocks & manes for a reason and I don't see why I should interfere with that. They have more of a coat in Winter & less in Summer. I can ALMOST see why someone would want to trim a horse that is working a lot & sweating but I really can't get my head around those happy hackers who trim coats then fit rugs or trim forelocks & manes then get them one of those bands with dangly things to keep flies away!!!!

I trim mine to keep them looking smart, I can't stand it if there not:rolleyes:
So, ears (when hair starts poking out!), bridle path, wiskers (not so their stubbly just a trim), legs, mane (pulled and thinned) and forelock. Tail isn't pulled as I dont like the look it leaves but it is cut when starting to get long. :p

Legs trimmed, mane pulled and a bridlepath cut, tail cut pretty short - can't stand long tails, myself! :D

I don't trim his whiskers, or his ears because they aren't very hairy, and I don't pull his tail because it isn't too horribly untidy, we don't show and I can't see him exactly enjoying the process and he's liable to make his feelings known.

You and me both! My native pony has a mane almost a foot long at the moment. It keeps flies off on hot days and (more often lately) rain off on wet days. I only trim his tail when it starts trailing in the mud or getting under his feet. Good to know I'm not the only one.

I couldn't agree more! Why do people trim coats and then get rugs!? I rode at a stables for years where the horses were always all au natural (except the odd tail trim when it was trailing on the ground! lol).

My tb wouldn't let me anywhere near him with clippers so he is totally natural (well I do pull his mane)

My welsh x is hogged as he has sweet itch and just rubs all his mane off otherwise. I like hogged ponies, but its a shame I can't keep his mane as he's chestnut and its a lovely flaxen colour; he'd look so pretty with it.

My recent cob addition is fully clipped and hogged :) She is so much happier 'naked' as her coat is ridiculously think and heavy. I'm not sure what I'll do in the winter yet, but even in this rubbish weather we've had she gets so hot unclipped I can actually feel the heat coming through her saddle!

Don't trim whiskers, forelocks, or pull tails. Otherwise very neat. Mines conniex tb & I tidy the ends of her forelock when it gets in her nostrils, fine enough to plait neatly long though. Have grown her mane long in the past, but being grey it was usually filthy, unless just washed. And except for before a comp/show I refuse to rug for anything but warmth. Daughters is mini x (we think) nf. Wouldn't remotely suit the full native look, more of a show pony type than a hairy. Her manes kept long enough for daughter to have fun doing stallion plaits, lattices etc but short enough to do proper plaits. And I do trim tails but like them fetlock length when in good condition.

I don't trim anything generally.

Youngster had half her tail lopped off last year after she decided it was going to kill her and went flying every time she moved it, to the point of sitting down when it touched her legs, now its growing back she's got used to it, and would only trim to keep it off the ground (and out from under her feet) now.

Whiskers I'd never touch, you just have to sit and watch a horse for 5 mins to see how much they use them in day to day life. Same as ear hair, keeps flies out.

Pan

my pony is hunter clipped in the winter, and has his feathers trimmed (their only small so look a bit silly) i trim his ears a little bit and he has a bridle path
normaly he has half his face clipped, he didnt fancy standing still to have nice straight lines, so he had his whole head clipped along with his eyelshes! i was not very pleased about that!

I've never cut/trimmed any of my horses tails and they have never grown long enough to reach the floor. Ear hair has to stay - my boy has a sort of flick growing out of each of his ears in the winter - obviously to keep rain draining away when he's eating, just as his beard does.

I was amazed, though, watching some of the section Ds at the Royal Welsh who were obviously trimmed.

Oooo spent two hours with him this afternoon.

Under jaw line and face guard hairs trimmed, whiskers left he needs them!

Bridle path

Ears trimmed up the outside!

Legs totally clipped

Mane and forelock pulled, tail pulled and trimmed at the end

He's a welsh X Vanner so grows inbetweeny fluff that he looks better all trimmed and neat. Plus he has a show on Friday so needs to look his best!

Love trimming and grooming, unless something is traditional or shown native I think it should be kept tidy :p

All of mine have manes and tails pulled, whiskers off, trimmed inside and outside ears, bridle path, and trimmed round their fetlocks if they're a bit wispy. ETA tails are all chopped off a few inches below the hocks, apart from the dressage horses whose tails give me nightmares.

The only one who escapes this treatment is one of my liveries - as a Friesian, I think he'd look a bit strange if I whipped it all off!

They all get clips appropriate to the amount of work they do in the winter, so the mare who lives out as a companion stays hairy, and most of the others either have a full or a trace clip.

I can't stand untidy horses!

ETA again, I'm not a hair nazi....my mare is blind and couldn't cope without her whiskers, so she has a nice big beard (and secretly I quite like kisses from her, they're not all stubbly like the rest of them)
