do you own a dog that you cant let off a lead??

Shirley Bassette has absolutely NO recall when she's on a scent and while she is not the speediest dog in the world, she sure has stamina. So she stays on a lead unless we're in an enclosed area.

My Jack cant be trusted off lead unfortunately, except in my field. He has a thing with other dogs and there is a boarding kennel next door so even then I must keep an eye on him.
This is the first time I've posted in here!

When we lived down in Berks then our terrier x wasn't allowed off his lead after he had a disagreement with an audi resulting in £8000k of vet treatment (only because he had insurance). The walks were all too close to roads/railways lines and when he was on a scent he was off.

Now we are in up in Moray where we walk him everyday on the beach and in woods with no roads nearby he is allowed off his lead.

I have a beagle who is fear aggressive and who develops selective hearing when he is off. Not a good combination so he stays on. He gets a good run though on an extending lead and he stays safe. With two more who can go off the lead, it's fine having one on all the time.

Me me me Frank is amazingly obedient and comes back even mid squirrel chase I'm very lucky! Although he has rubbish road sense and has to go on a lead then I'm hoping he will pass off his wise ways to the pup!

Ooops thought you said 'can' well the pup counts not sure I'm going to get him straight back and our old lab used to just go off on his own merry way far to independent to need a human!!

My JRT on his own is fine if there are no rabbits about :) The wappy one is fine too on her own but together they are like idiots and there is no recall - no obedience and I actually dont exist so I have to keep them on leads. :)

We are very lucky in where we live that I can let Dash off lead but if I had to walk them in public places I probably wouldn't trust him off lead. As it is he is actually very good most of the time - and steadily improving (but God I'm dreading lambing time)

I have one with 90% recall but with a huge prey drive, and one very insecure bitch who will tank off home if she gets a fright/feels under any stress/pressure.

So they only get off in enclosed spaces, it's no big deal, we live to close to a very busy road, a pheasant shoot and a very expensive, locally renowned, huge herd of Scottish blackfaces so I am not about to risk the potential damage and death that could be caused to fulfil some ideal of gambolling about in the countryside :p

We live in forestry, up the side of a mountain, close to a beach, we go running, climbing, training at least once a week and lots of brain exercise too so I don't think they are hard done by.

ive never left my dog off the lead as im afraid he will wonder off and go across the road without thinking! He is a king charles btw :)

Yeah, check out my sig, what an awful life my dogs lead, just criminal :p
Mine go offlead too, but only in certain areas with good fencing :p
Not everything in life is black and white.

2 x whip/bed lurchers. Only let off lead in enclosed area which on odd occassion have also escaped from esp smooth blue girl who loves the many muntjac we have surrounding us! Have had more heart stopping absenses than I care to remember so now a hawk eye when let off and try to keep them playing to keep mind busy. 2 x terriers are off lead more than on and will stop mid chase if called most of the time.

All my dogs go offlead, I have to be careful with one however but he goes
off lead everyday. Its a crime to keep a dog onlead - you have to accomodate
the naughty ones.

Not a case of accomodating them - I had a much easier time with my previous staffie who stuck to me all the time - in London Parks, out hacking, through other dogs the lot. My current 2 can not. My bitch has a random iffy streak ( no rhyme or reason).. so not risking her and my dog is much much too sociable. So for safetys sake - at the yard and yard land (with deer fencing)off lead. In public places, short lead or extendable if appropriate. If you do not have total control over your dog, then you should have it on a lead. Rather a lead then an accident or worse!

I have a large rescue who goes on a long lead -- we've tried off lead and while she gets on with people and other dogs (mostly - she's a dominant bitch and doesn't like similar), her chase instinct is so strong that she takes off and loses her brain. She's too big to take a risk. Had five homes before us and I promised the rescue she would be with us for life. I'd rather her life was longer than a few years!

I didnt mean you :/

As I said, I have to be careful with one of mine - he can be dog aggressive and also
doesn't like most men. I have to choose carefully where we walk but he's a running
dog and needs to run!

Ahh, so it's "criminal" to keep your dog on the lead unless your name is CaveCanum? Good to know ...

God my dogs have such a hurrendous life with me, thankfully I know where mine are unlike the woman over the park who lets her siberian off and spent 45 minutes looking for him the other night, thank god OH had grabbed him and was looking for her, stupidly we saw her yesterday and it was off lead again over the otherside of the park a million miles away from her :rolls eyes:
Look at my sig pics do they look unhappy to you?
