As the topic says, do you pay for the last day at a livery yard? Owner is asking me to pay for the day and the trailer storage....
Was messaged today asking if I could empty stables now so they could paint for new people, which means last 2 nights they will sleep in the menage.

I never have had to before and everything will be removed the day before (been moving over the past week as was asked to start getting stuff out so the owner could do things) with just the horses to be moved on the day, locked and loaded by 9am.

Is the use of a stable charged per calendar day or part thereof, or per 24 hours or part thereof. Either would be reasonable.

Most people have to give a month's notice. If they hand that in on, say, the 16th, then I would expect to leave on the 16th of the following month and pay one month livery.

If notice is by the week then I would expect to hand in notice on, say, a Tuesday and leave on the following Tuesday paying one weeks notice. In that case, it's clear that you would not actually be paying for the last calendar day, just the last 24 hours, or part thereof.

So you haven't got full use of the facilities you pay for, having to remove all stuff but also vacate your stables for menage, several days sooner than your actual moving date? And you are expected to pay full rate.
I don't think that's on, tbh. But I keep mine at home so don't know if it's usual for leaving livery to do this to the benefit of incoming new customer.

I think its a cheek, if i am paying for a stable i would want use of that stable until i leave, not upsetting the horse to 'lodge' in a menage for 2 nights. Also do they expect you to muck out the menage every morning by a certain time before it is being used?

Yes you should pay as I assume you also have the use of a field and facilities. However I would keep the horses in the stables at night up until the day you leave. I paint my stables most years and it doesn't take long at all. If you are leaving at 9.00 am there will be plenty of time to paint it and for it to dry.

Am not really sure why you are needing to be asked to pay for a DAY...........??? That seems really bizarre. I mean surely if you've given the statutory notice to your YO of a month/week or whatever, then there would be a fixed day when you would be expecting to be vacating the yard??

So I'm rather unsure as to the circumstances. To me as a YO, you're either entitled to be on the yard and have paid accordingly for any facilities that are being provided; or you have given your notice that as from a certain day, say "X", you will not be there and therefore no livery services would be provided and in addition you would be expected to have removed your horse and all your possessions from the yard.

It is either one or the other. Surely.

I see you’ve edited your post giving more information.

If you can’t move yards two days early, as others have said you could refuse to vacate your stables. (But you could also leave them out - I’d suggest in their field- and pay a reduced amount).

It's their problem they've promised the stable to someone else without enough gap to paint it, I'd be fuming about having to move them out and would not pay for a stable I couldn't use. If they've taken notice on a rolling period (ie any day of the month) then sure, pay up until the last day you use the stable including the move date, but not if you've been evicted!

I must be dense because I am not sure I really understand the question.

If I give a month’s notice then I pay for the full month. So 1 June to 30 June, even if I were to move a few days early.

I wouldn’t pay for 1 July, unless for some reason, I couldn’t move my horse before 1 July and my horse was still there on the morning of 1 July. Then I’d expect to pay the full day.

ETA - I’d be ok with doing a favour to the YO and letting my horses sleep in the manege to facilitate painting, as long as my horses would be happy with that. I’d see it as a favour and a nice gesture. If my horses wouldn’t be happy, then I’d just say ‘I’m very sorry, I don’t think that will work because I need Horse to be as settled as possible for the move.”

Sorry not much help but my initial thought was what the other liveries are going to do when they want to ride and your horses are stable in the ménage 🤔
