Do you prefer a large livery yard or smaller one and reasons?

I prefer the smaller ones, I personally feel better in a smaller yard as you get to know one another better, am currently on a big yard of roughly 50+ horses and I really do not like it one bit...far too busy for me.

I am on a very large yard 100+ and I prefer it to the smaller yard that I was on with 5 horses.
There is always someone around, you dont feel scared walking up to the field by yourself, the security is very very good, there is always someone to ride with, if like me you only have 1 horse there is usually another horse out in the field, if your horses are on box rest theres enough going on around them horses coming and going all day rather than being left from morning to night.
I dont think I would move to a yard with less than 15 horses on for all the reasons I've listed above unless I had more than one horse and somebody to come up with me.
I cant really think of many downsides, the stables are split into rows of ten so really it feels like you are on a small yard of 20, there is enough space and schools the max I've shared a school with there is 3, oh and about half of the horses are on full livery so barely see their owners anyway

I love big yards but I've only been on 1!

I am on a 40+ horse yard. Love it.

There's always someone around to chat to. And it's much easier on a big yard when you don't get on with a particular person (you are able to ignore each other much more easily, or avoid generally all together).

^^^^ What she said.
Been on two small yards and they were both horrendously cliquey and bitchy.
Give me a bigger yard any day, laws of probability says I'm going to get on with somebody

I like larger yards but not sure I could cope with 44 horses!!

There are 25 on our yard, though half are racehorses that we don't have much to do with as they have their own grooms, separate paddocks and separate tack room. I like a bigger yard because I find it more sociable, because there are always people to ride (or more specifically, to jump) with, and lots of people to bounce ideas off and learn from. My current horse dislikes a small yard, he was very unsettled at the last place (about 12 horses) as he'd come from a huge (100 horses??) yard. He is much happier at this one because there is always something stabled if he's in, and always something turned out when he's out. He also hates individual TO and on a larger yard, you usually have access to either paired or group TO.

I moved to a bigger yard at the weekend having always been on smaller ones. I was usually the only one at the yard riding in the evenings at my old yards and I was a bit worried about the school etc being overcrowded, but went up last night and guess what? No one there! Apparently no one rides in the week after work anyway, so I still get the school to myself - happy days!

Can't comment on any other pros/cons yet though as only been there 3 days!

There are 17 horses on our yard more people when you take sharers etc into account which for me is about right. I think 5 or 6 people would be too few but my last yard had about 50 horses on it and was quite stressful.

Yes, can get quite stressful at ours, normally a queue for the washbox, sometimes 10 in the school at once, horses wind each other up in the fields and then like a domino effect with all the others going loopy and never any peace, however good support network and always someone around to lend a hand so difficult one really I guess.

Larger yard - people on a small yard are much more likely to 'gang up' against you I feel, and you get much more of a feeling of being looked down on/watched constantly

(and all of the ones I've been on have been full of 'know-it-alls' who don't actually ride themselves...)
Been on 2 large yards, and a 3rd where I didn't keep a horse but rode a lot. All were much easier to be on, as the awful people had other awful people to stick with, and the nice ones also stuck together!

Current yard is fairly large, but with 4 schools & hacking, and a few people with retired horses, it never gets /too/ busy, and there's always someone you can get along with!

Golly some of you are an massive yards. There are 4 of us and we all muck in and help each other out, its such a great place to be, we do things as a yard and spend many lovely summer evenings judt chilling with bbq and some pimms, can imagine that one a larger yard

Biggest yard I've been on was about 30 odd horses in total? Smallest there was 3

Both have advantages and disadvantages. Now on a 12 horse yard, and prefer it. Enough people to talk to but not too many, big yard was quite bitchy, tiny yard, only my friend to ride with, so if she wasn't there I was on my own. However both bigger yards I have been at still seemed quite empty half the time as hardly anyone actually rides when I do

Prefer smaller yards. I feel that if there are any problems, I know people a bit better on smaller yards so they are more likely to notice something and let me know.

Less trouble on smaller yards (although I am sure I can be proved wrong there lol)

Left a yard with four horses (only two ridden) in the summer and moved to a big yard - around 50. I think on balance I prefer the bigger yard as there is always company around and people to do things with. But if I had the choice I guess I'd pick somewhere with around 20-25 horses! Fussy me
