Do you put bedding down when traveling?

Hi, just a quick question really...do you put bedding down, be it straw, shavings etc on the floor when transporting your horses?

I have rubber floor like most but I always put some shavings down at the back as I know my horse doesn't like pee on his feet!! But my friend travels with nothing however she has a lorry and I'm in a trailer.

Does it depend on what you travel in?

I don't.
The trailer has matting.
My horse wont pee when we are moving so can wait until he gets of onto grass on in a stable, so he won't get splashed!

I do on rubber matting as one pee and the trailer is like an ice rink!

Yes, I put a small amount of shavings in the trailer in case they pee & used to in my lorry too when I had that

Yes, usually an amount equal to a shovel full of shavings at the rear end.
If I have a long trip or long time with a Fuzzy on board standing about, will also take shavings with me.

Always have done for big or small boxes

Yep, put shavings down because all of my horses have always peed as soon as we get moving, then again when they get back on to leave the venue.

Always. Whatever matting is down it will be slippery if it gets wet - with wee or rain or even a horse with wet feet. Theres nothing like a horse slipping to train it not to load.
Also, even if a horse doesn't stale while travelling, it may need to if waiting at an event or stuck in traffic.

Yes, shavings in the lorry to stop matting getting slippy or lorry smelling.

I put either shavings or hay whatevers there, just to stop the mats getting slippy.

I don't put anything in - none of my horses have ever staled in the lorry (or trailer when I had it). My old boy never used to pee away from home, so I tried putting shavings down to encourage him, but it didn't work. I guess if I were going on a long journey I would.

Yes, I put shavings down on the rubber mats in my trailer to prevent the horse slipping on wee or droppings. (My mats get very slippery when wet.).

Always a little bit of something in lorry & trailer, a couple always wee and a couple hardly ever wee. I wouldn't want them holding it in because they don't want to get splashed! they are normally travelling for over an hour at least though

But surely if they are wearing travel boots or bandages there'll be no "splashage" . . . we don't put anything down for Kal, he always wees when he first gets on, he never slips.

P.S. He also wees when he goes in the washroom - same type of rubber matting .

I don't use boots or bandages, that's a different discussion! One of mine wont wee unless it's soft underfoot so would hold it in until he got off which could be hours.

Yes, always. Shavings on the lorry to absorb any wee, not only to prevent splashing but also to absorb it so it doesn't get under mats and rot the flooring. Having a layer of bedding down also helps to quieten the noise from the road so I'm told.

I find it easier to scoop up shavings and throw away than have to try and get bit of poo out of rubber matting bumps

Echo the other posters...i bed the rear half of my trailer down as my boy will poo and pee on his journey and yes, we're matted too, for the reasons that have been mentioned.
