With all the hysteria and hype concerning stolen horses, advice is given that freezemarking is the best deterrent. Do you reckon someone is making a pile of money here?

Well the waiting time to have your horse freeze marked now must be weeks or even months,when i had mine done last year i had to wait 6 weeks, so no i don't think that they will make more money than usual since i doubt that they will be able to mark any more more horses since they only got a few qualified people in each area,and also in my opinion Freeze Marking was not that expensive,its the annual membership they make their money on,and if people are like me they just want their horses marked to keep the thieves away

I think the mobile phone companies will be very happy due to the vast numbers of text messages being sent, forwared and circulated fomne network to another.

I'd expect any stolen horse to be listed on the stolen horse register...

Maybe so but at whose expense? Only from the expense taken from our wallets. As for our horses and ponies they are most certainly not being exploited by all the goings on and neither are we. I personally believe that the more positive steps we can take towards guarding the safety of our horses the better. If that means an increase in the use of freezemarking which is by far the best form of visible branding of ownership and deterrent then so be it.
Without sounding harsh I do believe that with all the reports of suspicious individuals and thefts it has given some owners a huge wake up call. If you value your horse/pony then for goodness sake make sure you take action to safeguard them from thieves. I am a firm supporter of freezemarking as it is so visible in most cases. So personally I would welcome an increase to the number of freezemarking sessions as a result of recent breaking news. The more we can do to deter thieves or would be thieves the better in my opinion.

I guess its a very good reason to review security and get round to marking the ones you havent "got round" to yet!! I think its all positive, I just wish people would stop posting about "texts from a friend"!!!

We should only quote first hand experience or police confirmed issues!

We bought a new horse a few weeks ago. As son has been horseless since the beginning of Jan I decided to let him have a few weeks riding & then book him in for freezemarking before we go on holiday when he's off work anyway. Big mistake! Phoned both freezemarking companies and they both commented that they have been inundated because of these texts. With the timing of PC camp we look like having to wait, though 1 company did say they would have a good think & try & fit him in.
