If you buy a new horse, or dog or cat or whatever, and you don't like its name, would you rename it? My dog Leah was named by the rescue centre who took her in - her original owners had called her Lala like the Tellytubby so the centre staff wanted to name her something that sounded similar to that. I'm not really that keen on it - it's not a very "doggy" name and people always think she's a boy called Leo or Liam.

But even though she was only 18 weeks old when we got her, we still felt like it was too late to change her name after she'd already gotten used to this one. Would you have changed her name? Would you change the name of an adult animal if you didn't like the one it had been given, or leave it to avoid the trouble of teaching it to recognise a new name?

My horse was called George when I got him. He does not look like a George so I renamed him Hadleigh.
We rehomed a 6 month old rotty who was called Sage. We weren't sure about the name but couldn't come up with anything we liked better that sounded similar so it stayed. Kinda like it now.

I changed my dogs name from Spike to Jake when we got him from the RSPCA. We asked them if they thought changing his name would be a problem (as he was 5 when we rescued him and he had always been Spike) and they basically laughed! They said they get loads of dogs in (strays etc) that they have no idea what they are called and so give them a new name, and all get used to it quickly. You just have to use it a lot to begin with, when feeding, taking for walks etc.

it's supposed to be bad luck to change a horses name.

i would change a dogs name, they pick up on stuff so quickly, and if i really didn't like a horses name i'd change it.

yes, no problem. some people think its bad luck but i dont believe in such things...

i dont tend to ask horses stable names when im buying so i can jsut call them whatever, obvioulsy registered names/passport names stay the same but if a horses stable-names is, e.g. mr snuffly, no chance

i find if i have a bucket of food they dont give a monkeys what im calling them

I once changed my horse's name as she was called mary and i really didn't like it! Maybe it was bad luck though as she was the worst horse i ever owned!

My cat is called Laalaa - after the Teletubby! She had this name when she went into the rescue center twelve years ago and we never changed it. We tried Lulu and occasionally she is 'poor baby Lulu' but she is still Laalaa

The other rescue girly is called Hedges (had a brother called Benson) - what do you change that to???? And try getting a Spanish vet to pronounce it.

I don't rename my pets, no. Not because it's unlucky or any such tosh, but because that's their name. You wouldn't rename your friend because you didn't like what her mum called her.

I have only renamed one animal because I didn't like it. Fleur, my pretty GSD in my siggy was from a rescue centre and they had named her Bianca - she just didn't suit the name and was so pretty, like a flower, so ...

My mare's passport name is Toorafin Lady so her previous owners called her Lady (they bought from a dealers who probably just called her Lady too). I hated the name so with the help of you lovely HHO'ers by giving me suggestions I renamed her Tia (Maria).

We have renamed two of my dogs, both rescues, they both came with names that didn't suit them and which they ignored. so we changed them, and both dogs started responding to the new names.

When I first bought P, the woman who had him for a couple of weeks as he was too bad to be moved nicknamed him Pedro... I really couldn't hack it, but thinking about the bad luck conotations it always had, I shortened it to Peds... this over time got extended to Pedito (or potato!!), then when I met my lovely hubby, I mentioned it once, and when he finished laughing, he told me Pedito means 'little fart' in Spanish (or Honduran Spanish)... and oh my goodnight does it fit! windiest horse in the world!

We had Willow - became Bobby
Domino - became Dave
Kalla - became Daisy

OH renames all our pets, he's even renamed some other people's horses on the yard.

Not generally, but Bill our CPL feral cat at the yard was called William.

The name is too long, reminds me of a dog who used to bite me alot, so I shortened it to Bill. I felt I could not shorten it to Willie, especially as he is ginger!!

My cat was called Sasha when I got him. I think Sasha is a girl's name, so I called him Rosco (after the dukes of Hazzard Sheriff!). Henry suited his name and got to keep it. Little B (Branston) didn't have a name, so I called him Branston after a pony called Pickle!

Chloe was called Ness, but I didn't think it suited her. I wanted a girlie name, and came up with Chloe the Clone (well, she looks like Henry in girlie form!). She answers to it already.

Come to think of it, there's only Henry whose name I haven't changed!!!
