do you ride in the snow?

We don't have an arena but we can ride on the fields and safe to say I don't think ill be doing that again for a while, although my horse is a bit if a plonker.

As long as the arena surface was relatively flat before the snow fell you should be fine. We borrow a school which we don't use in the snow as the rabbits like to dig in it so your never sure where holes may be

I'd ride in arena, but gently. Walk and trot, no razzing round quickly in small circles. :) If your horse is shod you'll need to watch out for snowballs forming in hooves. This doesn't seem to happen on unshod hooves.

Having attempted to lunge on a snow covered surface this afternoon, I would say its not worth it, had to stop several times to remove snow stilts. It's just not worth the risk - mind you we do have an indoor so I'm not feeling too pressured!

I wrapped vet wrap around my shod horse's hooves and secured with duct tape to avoid the snow balling effect. Took him for a play around the paddocks in the snow drifts which he enjoyed. Don't think I'd want to be doing tight circles though!

Yes. When it isn't minus silly C. Nothing is shod and snow tends to be dry and powdery so balling isn't that much of a problem.

Yes I do, I hack out too but only round the fields. A bit of Vaseline or spray on cooking oil, in the hooves, stops snow balling up :)

I just went out with a snow shovel and cleared a 20m circle in the arena, I was then able to lunge at walk and trot without too much trouble. Think I stopped 3 times in 20mins to pick his feet out.

As long as its not icy yes powder snow is fun my horse loves it has a gigle playing it, i usually go bareback with a blanket on ned so his heat keps my bum and legs warm and we jsut have a fun hack.
when we were kids we use to build jumps with the snow and practice bareback jumping with the ponies as snow was a great soft landing and we had so much fun and the ponies loved it as not all jumped many just charged through our snow walls and rolled around in ti having a great time

I will hack out in slushy snow as our lanes are very quiet. However now everything is frozen, the ice is too dangerous.

Like another poster I tried lungeing yesterday in the school, but the 'stilts' were forming so quickly it was getting dangerous.

Nothing for it but to sit it out and just hope it melts/defrost soon.
