Just wondered if anyone rugs their youngsters if they don't need it? I have a 2yo Friesian x tb that is hardy and happy not rugged. Last winter he was in at night (unrugged) and out for varying times during the day (dependant on weather). Obviously I will rug him if he needs it but I know some people rug as a matter of course and just wondered if there was some reason behind it. (I mean horses not in work and not being shown etc).

I sometimes will rug youngsters that have little or no shelter in their field... it is also a good idea if I am having to feed hay, as the less they are shivering, the less hay they wil need to keep them fat!

I have a 4 yr old cob, she has never had a rug on (well only once to see what she thought of it!) and is out every day in the winter and in at night. She is as tough as they come and has never shown signs of feeling the cold.

i have never ever rugged youngsters before, but my 2 2yr olds are out in the most windswept field in England, i reckon. even though they've got a shelter, the wimpy one starts shivering if she's daft enough to get wet through, so i then have to bring them both in to dry out. so, i'm going to rug them this winter, in mw rugs... should save a bit on hay bills too.
