Just wondering what people do when the ground is like it is?
I have South of England PN on saturday, and cant decide what to do!!

Thinking for the dressage, probably not, then small pointy ones for sj and xc? if any?

I always stud up on grass whatever the conditions, it just makes a big difference. Definalty stud up for dressage as well. Your horse will feel more confident and will produce better paces and you'll get round those corners easier

I agree

i always use studs when the ground is hard especially but take a leaf out of the aussies book and dont over do it. barely bigger than road stud in front and bigger points behind. if the ground is that bad you need enormous studs all over i wouldnt be running anyway!! you are welcome to come find us and ask on saturday if you are in doubt. extremely large silver truck with smoked glass windows x x

Personally I haven't studded up for any part of the past 3 events, not actually sure when to use mine. Had them in all the time last year, having no leg filling problems this year and haven't slipped at all.

i wish there were more studies done on it too
i cant help thinking that you wouldnt wear studs out on the roads, and when the ground is rock hard it almost feels like concrete too, so would their feet not get even more shock from having to penetrate the ground each time they step down?
i suppose it depends on the individual horse too? unfortunately this is my second only event with new horse, so difficult to know what she prefers!!
Lucretia - may well look out for you!!

I alwayd do exactly the same as lucretia

Me too- road studs in front, small pointies behind and most likely only 1 in each shoe but that depends a bit on the horse.
Hard ground can be quite slippery, particularly when the grass gets trodden down so better to be safe than sorry

th difference is that most people wouldnt be galloping jumping and most significantly, turning at speed, on the roads or at least i would hope not! i am a minimalist when it comes to studs but hard ground with grass on it is very slippery. have you ever tried walking up a slope yourself when the ground is like that? And even polo peeps wear studs behind (obviously their turns are much faster though) and when i was showing we used studs if the ground was slippery, though nothing too big for fear of spoiling their action.
studies have been done on the action of the foot and hoof as it hits the ground and the front feet need to slip a tiny bit on landing as part of the shock absorbing process that is why over studding in front particularly is the work of the devil and the quickest way to an unsound horse i can think of.
as for the old chestnut of how many to have in each shoe, well as Boss said i think it depends on the horse. if you have chosen the right studs they will go into the ground and the foot will hit the floor level no matter wether you go for one or two. i have two horses on the yard that move so close behind that inside studs on either are likely to do more harm than good, but on another i think he moves bettter with two similar in each shoe.
the use of studs is a much neglected science IMO but i hope you are clearer now hammie. x

Yes but if the ground is THAT hard, i would question whether to run a all! I always use the smallest possible, and if ground is close to perfect, or slightly harder than perfect, wil generally only use one in each shoe.... more slippy ground I will put two behind, but at the most a small dome stud (1) in front.

I agree if the ground is that hard and like concrete like you said you shouldnt have to make that desicion as surely you wouldnt be running!!

SOE wont be that hard though iim sure f your worried about that.

Tis difficult decision though when the ground is hard but has a good grass cover. If you go early you'll benefit from a bit of softness, though likely to be slippery, but if you're later in the day, tis likely that the grass will have been decimated.

I'm going to use tiny pointy studs for fronts and behind at S of E. Got dressage this afternoon. Not going to stud up at all for the SJ or XC tomorrow
