YES!!! I don't want a crazed person running out with a shawn off shot gun!!
If unsure then you should check on a map to see if it IS private property, as some people have land that has right of way going through it, but don't want any tom dick or harry walkin a cross it so put up these signs!!
Yes because usually they are there for good reason.
I would not want people going across my private property or walking dogs in my horses field so I respect other peoples land.
Having said that
when I was a wee whipper snapper i used to ride in the odd place where i shouldnt off, but that was part of being a kid and riding ponios!....doing silly things.
I do sometimes ride on a public footpath, which is a farm track, used to be a bridle path but then got change of use (after a certain date) council would of changed it back if we had the petition in on time but because half of them are bent that are on the council and friendly with certain farmers, they stopped us horse riders using it!
). Anyway I refuse to stop riding on it, they can kiss my ****(sorry personal rant there....long story).
We have recently bought the land adjacent to our house. There are absolutely no rights of way through it , this has all been verified in all the legal searches etc. We have put a new gate on it and private property signs etc. The first night we saw an older couple climb over the gate and then yesterday someone had pulled the sign off. I was just surprised that people have so little respect for other peoples property.
has the land been used by locals for walking etc ? is it being used as access for somewhere ? sometimes if a path has been used for a long time then people feel that it is ok to carry on - maybe it should be ? just a thought .....
Kids you can forgive (well you know what I mean) but an older couple! Did you not challange them?
We used to have kids straying in our field all the time, odd time sweet little girls just wanting to stroke the ponies but some older lads kept coming in all the time, more you told them off, the more they carried on doing it!
we have a path going right through our farm, a bloody nuisance but that's how it is, people walk through in all sorts of attire, expecting it to be a "walk in the park," then for no apparent reason go wherever they like, sometimes!! trouble is, cattle are turned out with calves, a dangerous situation if the walkers have dogs, but it still doesn't occur to them--!! do not be surprised at the lack of respect these days for property and belongings.
It has been used by people to walk their dogs in the past. We spoke to most of the regulars and explained that this was no longer going to be the case, they were fine about it. There are loads of alternative walks around here. It leads nowhere and people literally walk around the perimeter.
We have a farm near us and it doesn't say private property or anything. Every time I ride out I go up there to see if I can speak to someone, but there never seems to be anyone around. In this case I'll carry on riding this route until I do find someone to speak to, as there are no signs.
But no, I'd never go anywhere that clearly asked me not to.
I do but I have been known to go places I'm not really allowed!!
Infact nearly every ride I go on!!
Its really annoying though, just down the road from us is a public footpath, its a wide track that goes up past some houses and into some fields (on which I have permission to ride) and to get round the proper was is miles round on the road.. Anyway there is just this one annoying man who used to complain every time I went past, hed just say Horses arent allowed up here you know! I carried on going up there anyway because there was no other reason not to go up apart from the miserable man! Hes given up now anyway and doesnt bother saying anything!
Im a bad girl!!

You mean you ride through the farm yard or just open field gates?
I ask because we own a large dairy farm and we do not have private property signs on any of the gateways that are accessed from the lane leading to the farm.
I would be quite put out if someone decided they could ride in our fields simply because we had neglected to mark them private property. Surely it's obvious that a farm, being farmed, is private land....unless there is a footpath or bridleway clearly marked?
Not having a go at you.....just wondering if people would think our land is open access owing to no official signs on the gateways.
Yeah i take notice permitting that there isnt a legal right of way. It really annoys me when people do things like that. I have a farm right across the road from me that has a footpath through the field i can see. Its right up the top by the farm house but they insist on walking their dogs ALL over the field not just there and letting them sh*t everywere. Last year they did it all over the crops he had planted, which i thought was down right rude, ingnorant and disgusting. He was growing them for a purpose...
Think there are certain rules tho with the right of access aren't there its not just a case of where you want (tho almost) your not allowed to say damage crops etc May be wrong there hope not otherwise lord help us.
OP yes probably would take notice of a sign unless I knew area and had an idea it really wasn't.
I always take notice of private property signs because once, when I was walking my dog, I saw a field with PRIVATE PROPERTY marked on the gate and it had trees and a lake and I didn't know what it was, so I (stupidly) decided to go under the gate and find out. Left my dog outside the gate in case there were animals in there or something, and just as I was exploring I heard a car behind me and there was a very angry landowner yelling at me!
Most embarrassing moment ever - I certainly shan't be doing that again!
I'd go ballistic if I had signs up and people walked/rode/biked through my property without asking, why should I do it to anyone else? They may have their reasons, boring things like livestock, crops, privacy, compensation claims.
If I am asked, I actually don't mind people riding in the woods, but not around my exercise track (it has been done!) or near my fields, it upsets the stallion and drives my dogs nuts. Of course, if my stallion, or dogs, cause a trespassers horse to bolt, throw the rider etc guess who gets the blame? Me! That is why I have signs up, ignore them if you wish, but don't blame me if you don't like the consequences.
In Scotland the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 comprehensively codified into Scots law the ancient tradition of the right to universal access to the land in Scotland. The act specifically establishes a right to be on land for recreational, educational and certain other purposes and a right to cross land. The rights exist only if they are exercised responsibly. Basically there are no trespass laws here. You can't go wandering into someones garden but estates or farmland etc are fair game.
You can't just wander through crop fields obviously.

There is actually another reason, that being the fact that nobody is permitted to take a horse along a public footpath.
