Do you think horse prices will fall imminently due to cost of living?

I think prices in general will come down. I have seen it all before! Horse prices reflect the state of the economy. In my early 20s (OK going back a long time now) an ordinary horse was about £250, I think that was the price I paid for a little TB that I evented and hunted when I was 21.

Then they started to go up a bit - around £750 for the ordinary riding club/hunter/family type and coloured cobs weren't around. Then I sold my last horse for £750 which was an entirely OK price for the sort of animal she was. Due to having children I then didn't have a horse for 10 years. By which time an ordinary horse was making £2,500 ish. This grew to £6,000-£8,000 quite quickly. I was on a hack at a riding school and the groom riding with us was on the horse that cost that much and we were all amazed, it was OK but nothing special.

About 2 years later you could get a horse for around £1,800. This was probably at the time when interest rates were massive and people were walking away from their houses as they couldn't afford the mortgage and no one could afford to buy.

Economically things have been good lately overall, fairly stable anyway. Young adults will not have known anything except low interest rates.

The lower end of the market seems to be slowing down - I’m seeing horses advertised for longer and a) prices reducing across the market in general and b) ads where the price is getting drastically reduced to the pre-covid price for that horse almost.

Ive been considering a 3 year old to back and bring on with the aim of keeping if they sell themselves to me or selling in summer as a family all rounder/mother daughter share type. (In the absence of being able to afford something up and running for keeps!)
I don’t want/ expect to make money, but an increase in purchase price vs sales price would be handy.
I’m holding off personally, because I think prices might just drop and the low level family all rounder I’d like to turn out might no longer be so sought after if families are struggling to pay their bills.
If I was aiming for a more competitive all-rounder/pc pony/serious competition prospect then I might still take a punt because I think the ones able to afford that are likely to be able to continue to do so.
Yes, I’m aware I am stereotyping to a certain extent and it’s all guess work at the moment, who knows which it will go!

If you just want something to keep you occupied and making money (to buy new lorry) is a bonus then why not. If making money is more essential and/or you couldn’t keep said project if the market crashes then no.

Ive noticed a lot more horses for sale over the past few weeks! I couldn’t find a single fell/dales/highland over the past 6 months and the ones that I did see were a fortune but yesterday there seems to be loads on horsequest ?‍♀️

I don't think prices have come down yet, but I've seen a lot more ponies coming up for sale on Facebook recently, compared to the past few years. I think people are starting to feel the pinch and in some cases trying to sell before prices fall?

I have noticed the ads sticking around a bit more also.

Yes, there's a nice pony which has stuck around for a little while at a dealer I follow. Possibly a difficult type to sell as she sounds a bit much for some children/teenagers but potentially a dream for a small adult. Can't help but think this time last year she would have been snapped up.

Still no highlands on horsequest

Mine didnt even get advertised. Well I stuck him on quality horses on FB with a rubbish ad, but he sold to the only people I let view, via word of mouth. I accepted less than the top whack suggested on here because I knew the home I wanted for him and it wasnt with a show producer or solely showing home so we worked it out to a place we were both ok with. I am thrilled with where hes going lifestyle wise and its only a few miles away to someone I know and a home for life or as close as you get to that in this day and age

A well trained horse will always make good money & is worth the money. Horses at the lower end will always be worth what someone wishes to pay. I can't see that good horses will suffer price drip.

I've been having a look recently at horse prices on H&H and Horsequest and seeing what I could have got in Lari's price range and to be honest I think the prices have gone down from what they were when I bought Lari.

Six months ago you couldn't get anything decent under £10k, now you seem to be able to find quite a lot of things in the £8-£10K region. I was most surprised.

There is still the odd horse out there that is lame but it seems easier to see.

I could only find 4 Dales on Horsequest, quite a few Fells though.

I had a look on Horsemart today, prices seem to have dropped a bit and unless everybody has neglected to remove sold horses, they are not selling so quickly either, Spring or not.

I noticed this too, the same horses sticking around, even the nice little allrounders. 2 of my friends selling quality broken and riding youngsters after having knocked quite a few thousand off still haven’t sold
