Well my plans for the future are huge, Buy a horse, and buy a shetland. The shetland would be to keep my horse company and maybe drive a cart. it would be walked with me, taken on some hacks with me, and played with and looked after.

Do you think that getting a shetland as a friend would be cruel?

But I honestly cant see anything cruel in what you are suggesting, so dont worry!

Nope not cruel, in fact i know so many people who do this, one of whom is my mum (although not a full shettie but a shettie cross Sec b)
 
I have a shetland as company - I have her on loan.

She is fantastic as a companion, and loves going out for little potters, but is just as happy mooching about in the field all day!
 
Why would it be cruel? The shetland would have a home away from small children and it would be exercised.

What IS cruel is buying a shetland that gets tormented by children and left to become obese and laminitic, or used as a lawnmower.

They are fantastic little ponies. Go for it!
 
No not at all i did it .Got ebony as a companion for my arab and the arab prtected her like ebony was her foal they were best buddies for a long time. Just watch out for the laminitis although i was lucky with my one!!!!!!
 
Just to second SOCKSNBLAZE just beware of laminitis. We had a shetland as companion to our TB yearling and the shetland got laminitis. At least these days you can get muzzles.
 
Why cruel? What would be cruel is not getting any company for the horse! Loads of people (including me!) have shetlands as companions. As others have warned though - shetlands are NOT easy options, they can easily get laminitis. That's the only problem, you might think it'll be nice having them turned out together but actually you'll probably find it practically cant happen as the shetland will need to be kept on restricted grass, whereas your horse probably won't need to be (so much).
 
Im sorry Linda but if people want laminitus advice, they will ask their vet, not you. After your advice on horse slaughter i wouldnt recommend your advice to anyone!

vieshot & JM07 - you two are totally out of order. Why the hell have a go at Linda for providing some info?! I also made a suggestion with regars to keeping laminitis at bay, so why attack this woman?! It is terribly sad that certain people (who I assume are not children) resort to petty bullying on this forum. Grow up both of you.
