we havnt had snow down here but we have had freezing temperatures so schools etc are like concrete, it has got milder since thursday and everything is thawing but its freezing again monday. competition centres around us are running bsja etc, the problem i have with this is that most people havnt been able to ride for the last month due to frozen arenas (unless your lucky enough to have an indoor) and road conditions so most people are going to competitions so they get the chace to give them a good work out which is fine but does this not increase the risk for accidents?? most horses would be abit fresh after having time off due to weather so warming up with others and jumping round a sustantial height to me is an accident waiting to happen. especially if you have a hot headed horse.
Is it just me that thinks maybe they should reconsider running?
 
The responsibilty should lie with the rider, not the show centre. Just because a centre is holding a BSJA show does not mean you have to be there, it's jsut stupidity IMO take a horse that hasn't been ridden in ages to a competition!

I'm one of those with a concrete arena but those with indoors/lots of rubber etc are riding as per normal so it is only fair BSJA still hold their shows.
 
nah, am looking forwards to dressage at the weekend :) not managed to school for 3 weeks but have been boxing to the beach once a week at the weekends and hacking out down the main road (gritted ;)) in the week :). I think it should be up to the individual as they know what they have managed with their horses.

I did manage to do a few circles in our field yesterday :) but tbh as I have no arena its par for the course to be mostly limited to straight lines apart from when having a lesson/competing in the winter.
 
Yes, some people have adequate facilities to keep riding during this weather, so provided the conditions at the venue are safe - I don't think they need to stop running.
 
I agree its the riders responsibility but also I feel that the competitions shouldnt be held. In fact I'd go further, in the good ol days there was a show season, spring to autumn and hunting in the winter, horses got time off or a change eg the show jumper went hunting. I just feel that the all year round culture is inherintly wrong and leads to greater specialism and a lot less fun.

iv never thought about it like this, iv prety much written the winter off due to the weather and lameness and lack of light and facilities to ride in the dark and actually have saved some money not competing.
 
Some people have exams etc in the summer. One lady at our yard hardly rides in the summer as that is when her business is really busy. So for some people winter is when they can compete, not the summer.
