After the posts below, I thought I'd chuck my bill in. To me its a lot considering the vet was there for about 5/10 mins max. Frankie got his leg stuck in the gate as I was leading him through (don't ask me how!), and did this to his hind leg:

They were just scrapes up his leg, and a cut on his fetlock.

I called the vet to be on the safe side, as the last thing I wanted was for the leg to get infected. The vet came, looked (and I mean looked, no proper examining of the wounds, just glanced and agreed with me that they were just superficial wounds), injected him with antibiotics, gave me 3 x antibiotic syringes,a bute syringe, and some dermagel. The vet was gone within 10mins. So imagine my horror when I received a bill for £178.05 (inc vat)!!!!!

Was it a normal hours call out??? I would assume so otherwise it would have been even higher...

Just to have the vet out to look at merlin to confirm he was still sound (daft eh) cost me £50..... so I suppose half was call out and half exam fee..... obviously no drugs.... and yes he was sound

Did u choose pastes instead of powder?????? They are about three times the price!!

Yeh, Frankie won't eat hidden medicines in his food, so it would have been a waste of money if he wasn't going to eat them, so I had the pastes so I could syringe it straight into his mouth.

Personally its cheaper if you mix them up in yoghurt and syringe them yourself. Three lots of powder would be under £10!
Same as bute thats normally about 45p a sachet!

Sounds good, I'll do that next time!

it does sound like a lot but when you break it down it does look normal. i guess you have to look at it like just for them to come out and examine your horse its at least £70 +VAT..
i had the vet out for Andy the other week, call out, examine, take off shoe and x16 bute.. i am expecting the bill to be at least £100..

I think your vet bill is about right, sorry.
But look on the bright side - I had to pay £3700 last year (not from insurance) for a colic surgery....no point getting depressed, pay and smile!

Sounds like the sort of sum I'd expect. Having seen the breakdown that confirms my view that it is not an excessive bill (even though I am sure it feels that way).

Seems pretty good to me, there are some pretty expensive medicines there.

Iwlays say itS £100 for any vet to turn up on a yard , then start adding on top of that.
