As when i put his rug on, although i do it gently, his head always goes up as i am going towards him with the rug as if he's in pain. He doesn't try to move out the way or anything, his head just shoots up. When he first came to me as a foal, he was on a livery yard and the silly people left him on his own. He consequently tried to go under the post and rail fence, i wasn't there but was told he tried to manoeuvre himself under like a dog and broke the bottom rail on his back as he went. What do you think?
Also in breeding

he could very well be, snapping the rail in an attempt to go under should be good enough a reason to get his back checked; in any way, just incase problems with handling etc in the future arise, imo

Does he react to any pressure points on his back?? Does he get irritated when you touch or groom his back?? If he was in pain, he might have a more radical reaction?

If not, I would have put it down to him being a fresh youngster, which is getting use to something new!

No he doesn't seem in any pain when you put pressure all along his back or groom it or anything. He was funny about his rug for a long time but i'm not sure why he does it really! I didn't get his back checked when he did it as he didn't seem to be in any pain. I just think he bruised it badly as he was only sore for a few days or so.

Does he seem short in his walk, trot.... does he track up? lame?? It may be something to look into, but sometimes we can look for problems which aren't always there

I only say this as it sounds similar to my youngster who is starting with the rug situation. He does exactly the same when OH first puts it on him (I'm out of action with broken bones). To help him get use to it, we take it on and off a few times, and feed him in it. When he's finished, take it off. Trying to make him 'forget' he's even wearing it. He has been really good, it's just that first time you put it on, he's unsure, eyes bulge and head goes up!

He's had his rug on since last year so its not that he's not used to it. He just does this head in the air business. maybe i am just reading too much into it like you say.

Hi,
I'd get it checked just for your own piece of mind. He will benefit from a massage anyway and at least you will know if it's a problem or not. If left untreated it could manifest into something else.....
