i am considering [ due to extreme poverty] offering basic horse care serices - feed/muckout/turn in & out/poo pick etc over the xmas hols
i have personal liability insurance
my vehicle is insured to be used for work
i am fully CRB checked
I can provide employer/equine/personal references
any ideas as to whether there would be interest in this & what people might charge?
thank you:)

Excellent idea if people want time off ie christmas day(I would charge £30 to do a visit ie muck and put out etc per horse or two if on same yard). xmas day £30-£35

Otherwise if its local £15 per horse or visit for an hour.

I wish I could find someone to check poo pick, pick feet etc/ my boy ie holidays...and he lives out! I would pay £10-15 for this check up with someone completely trustworthy.

I would and am using a service over new year. TBH I'd rather pay someone than ask a friend to help out. I dont feel bad as I know Im not putting on a friend and paying someone else instead.

Think it's about £20 at my yard for the full day, £7 on a normal day for muck out, turn out, catch in, feet picked out, rugs changed, feeds and hay done.

Careful not to step on any toes, babe, given you're relatively new there.

Is this at just your yard, or at other ones? I can see how it would be helpful for people, but I am a control freak and like seeing my horse on xmas day so wouldn't be for me - new year is a different matter though!

A lady near me wanted to charge £12 per horse per day for a weekend rate - considering we have 5 it was a little steep (£70 a day for 5 horses that live out!) Needless to say, we didn't use her :)

not planning to do it at my own yard [ altho would if it was helpful] - was thinking about the locality or 5 mile radius

I would be happy to use a service like that BUT you need to plan out what happens if you get 3 or 4 customers at different yards? - you would have to be very very honest with what your plans were for the day, as if i were paying someone I would want to know what time my horses would be turned out, brought in - and what are you going to do if it snows and some of the horses are not allowed out - dont think you will be wanting to do that much mucking out, haying, watering etc for that type of fee. Especially if the taps are frozen and you end up struggling to get waters done.

Good luck - but how about offering a tack cleaning service or just offering bring in and or turn out -you would probably make as much money doing this as doing a full service, and you would not have to work as hard.

I should have added that the lady I know is very well knowm to me and I wouldnt really want someone "new" doing him. Can you get your services out there now so people know you already? Im paying £10 a day as I insisted she doubled her costs, and there will be a nice bottle from Horse for her too

I wouldnt want it tbh - i love seeing and doing my horses every day of the year. I dont trust anyone around my horses and I wouldnt pay for anyone to look after mine.

do it hun i pay a girl - my stable angel and i love her to bits for her care to baby - £5 to muck out and £ 1.50 to bring in and turn out at weekends - but sure she doesnt charge that lol - and was setting abusiness up till back went (8 weeks on morphine) so advertised spread word and do it - never know where willl lead - my stable angel as a good business going at yard but she is sweet kind loving and puts her self out for her clients - truelly my stable angel and worth every penny she charges :) so DO IT DO IT :)

totally agree dancing queen - i plan my life around baby so no one just brings her in etc but christine i trust 200% she as had a blind horse she adores baby and baby loves her - i watched her around her horses before asking her and boy she is sweet kind and loving doesnt interfere just sorts my girl out with a cuddle - with out her i couldnt be with my lovely guy so sometimes you have to compromise and hey christine is no big compromise as shes lovely :)

a good idea , but really to cover yourself youi really need 3rd party liability and 3c care to do freelance. without you are leaving yourself wide open to claims (and we all know the stunts horses can pull!!)

Wish you were local to me!

I had Christmas day "off" last year as a single friend did not want to "do"Christmas and offered to do my horse for me. I insisted on paying her and would happily have paid a lot more. It was lovely to have a day with the kids without worrying about mucking out, feeding, turning in and out, rugs etc etc I also hate worrying I'm running out of day light, could relax and enjoy the day.

Would have to be someone I felt got on with my horse (he loves this friend) and someone I trusted, but that is something you would soon build up and once someone uses you, word of mouth is a wonderful advertisment.

If I was you I would go for it! Just think carefully about what you commit to so you can fit it all in and still have a life!
