Do you think there should be some sort of time limit?

Went to a hunter trial today and the cup is given to the highest placed member of the club hosting the event.

I know this prob sounds like sour grapes, but still - my daughter came 2nd in a class and the person who came first got the cup. Now my daughter has been a very active member of the club for about 4 years, but the class winner just joined the club today at the same time as entering the classes.

Plenty of people said they thought my daughter should have got the cup and she would have been thrilled to do so.

However, I guess 'rules is rules' - but it does seem a little unfair.

Do you think you should be a member of a club for say a month before you are entitled to the prizes for club members only?

Short answer- No I don't think so.

Longer answer- It would be different if she won and then joined so that she could get the cup. There presumably was no mention of time limits in the rules etc? I don't think that she should be penalised for only just finding the club and I must say, if it was me I would be quite upset if people were saying that I shouldn't have won it as I had just joined- it wouldn't make me feel very welcome. Particularly as I never win anything and therefore that would never happen to me!

I think your daughter (for what it's worth) did very well to come second and I bet she wasn't disappointed at all until people mentioned it to her!

Fraid not, rules is rules, and like jencots says, it itsn't like she won and then joined up! Think of her as a talented new member of your club and potential new friend rather than lusting after her cup!
Congrats to your daughter, she must be thrilled to do so well!

Um, no? Yesterday a girl won the 80cm class at our ODE and won some lovely prizes and a trophy (PC member). One parent was complaining because she was 17, and she thought there should be a age-limit on the entries... I was quite shocked at this- the girl won fair and square and age should be no barrier to that. The same applies here- the other person still won and hopefully she can go on and win lots for your riding club because of the warm welcome she received yesterday, rather than leaving feeling mildly confused why people were saying she was unworthy of winning what was rightfully hers...

At our club, the trophies are all given out at a big night we have in November, and to be eligable for them you have to have joined by the January before.

I do kind of understand where you're coming from actually. There was once an incident I know of someone joining the club purely to enter a members-only competition, and not to actually be a part of the club. Some might call it sour grapes, but it is irritating when people do things purely to hunt for trophies/ribbons.

I don't think this is the case here, however. She could have competed without joining, so it sounds like she wants to be a member, and isn't pot-hunting. All you can do is nod, as they've won the cup fair and square. Try not to let it get to you, and maybe politely suggest the introduction of a membership period in order to be eligable to win trophies at the next agm?

Well done to your daughter!

I dont see the problem, a member still got the cup and the person who wins should get it anyway. No, I dont think there should be a time limit on how long you're in the club before being eligible for winning member cups, why should there?
