This horse has had a few of these and have always dropped off themselve, however this one seems to be getting bigger and sticking around. Vet is due out soon for vaccinations so will be asking advice.

Do you think toothpaste would help it? It's about the size of a 50p Any thoughts? It just seems very angry is this a sarcoid? Thank you

I would rather get veterinary advice than slapping on toothpaste on that. How soon is the vet coming out for your vaccinations? I would be bringing that appt forward if not in the next day or so.

The world expert on sarcoids in horses is Professor Derek Knottenbelt. If you want to know whether or not to slap toothpaste on a TRUE sarcoid, read his definitive article. If you want to know whether to slap toothpaste on something that ISN'T a true sarcoid, ask yourself whether you'd slap it on a sore your baby had. I despair, I really do.

My boy had one similar to this , but bigger and it was "a true sarcoid" confirmed by Liverpool! the toothpaste worked extremely well on it, without causing my horse all the discomfort of having the liverpool cream put on and the area healed well with no scarring!
Even my vet who wanted to go the liverpool root was seriously impressed!!!:)

It was a question, the vet will see it and the question was only asked as I've been reading the other thread so wanted to know what people think.

I answered your question with my opinion sorry you didn't like my answer. Your horse's lesion looked a lot more angry looking than any of the other sarcoids featured in the toothpaste threads. Your post implied that the vet visit for vaccs was coming up in the near future. Hence my reply that I would bring the routine appt forward so the vet could see the lesion at it's worst and have the discussion.

I am currently awaiting Liverpool vet opinion on my lad's one re BCG injection but it is so near the eye that I really do not want to put toothpaste on it. Toothpaste is alkaline and would not be pleasant if it was rubbed and got some in the eye.

I'd give it a go, there are many cases where it has been successful and as it is painless, unlike Liverpool cream, I'd prefer it to going that route first. (and yes, if it worked on my baby too I'd use it.) ;)

I would not be self treating that.
I would keep it well covered with summer fly cream until the vet sees it .
I probally would have that lasered off .

I honestly think its red and inflamed due to the fly's landing on it and aggravating it. This happened to my horse and his angleberry (large sarcoid) kept getting caught on the fence and it would look like your horses sarcoid. The vet said he would take it off but not until the winter due to the flies but he had to take it off earlier in teh end as the flies were having a field day feasting on it.

In the end he came out and cut it off with a scalpel.

Its not particuarly toothpaste that is so sucessful in these cases, its more the stuff toothpaste contains, ie the tiny particles that clean your teeth by rubbing on them, like exfoiliating them. You could most likely use any type of toothpaste that had these particles in it. Its the action of the particles on the sarcoid than the ingredients in teh toothpaste. This is in my humble opinion anyway.

Personally, after watching several horses go through painful treatment with the Liverpool cream, and one needing it repeated three times (five applications each time), I would much rather try toothpaste first. Afterall, we put the stuff in our mouths!

However, in this case OP, I would ask my vet first. I would want to check that the growths were not malignant as sometimes bleeding growths can be. If it is confirmed that they are not malignant, then yes, I would try toothpaste.

the thing is, liverpool cream is not the only recommended treatment, proper tying, laser etc can also be recommended and am sure if you felt strongly against cream treatment the next best alternative would be suggested- suggestions for the treatment of my lads carcinoma have certainly been conservative.

Repeating my thoughts on toothpaste would get me a holiday ;) :p

It looks exactly the same as the sarcoid my horse had on his belly last year. It was banded and then the flies got to it and it became badly infected and was a complete mess for about 4 months or so. The vet then rebanded it without success. When he went to horsepital last December for a tieback op I asked the surgeon if he could laser it. Touch wood it seemed to do the trick and cleared up what was one very large and angry looking sarcoid and it has not returned and has healed well.
My boy also had about 6 small wart like sarcoids on his sheath and belly a year ago. On advice of a new vet I applied Zovirax coldsore cream daily and within a week they had all disappeared and to date have not returned.
