Hi just wondering anyones thoughts

Last Wed i bought mare in from the field very lame on near hind ...she had half pulled her shoe off and must have re trodden on it driving a nail into her hoof, called the vet who removed shoe hoof then started bleeding the vet bandaged hoof and gave antibiotics and bute

Mare has been stabled scince this time and i have removed the bandage she is much more sound now and today is her last dose of antibiotics

Do you think it will be ok to turn her out (her hind legs swell if in the stable too long)

The vet said it would be ok after a few days in our ields are not too wet though there is the odd patch of boggy ground

Thanks for reading this

just an idea but why don't you bandage the hoof and cover in duck tape, ( as if you had a poltice on).or you could use a disposable nappy a bit of vet wrap then duck tape over that - if you needed a bit of padding if she's sore .this would keep it dry, clean and water tight for the period of turnout. though remove it when you bring her in.

One of my horses did this not so long ago; it was the toeclip rather than a nail that she embedded in her sole. The farrier pared away the hole to clear out all contamination and let it breathe, and packed it with iodine soaked cotton wool. It grew out quite quickly and we didn't keep her in for long.

I would think it would be OK to turn out now since your vet said it would be OK after a few days. He must have been reasonably confident the hole wasn't deep or in a dangerous position.

A bandage, boot or pad and gaffer tape might be a safe bet like the other people have suggested. Could you tape off any boggy areas?

Thanks for the suggestions

Hoof bandaged and taped (not sure how long it will last !)

Turned her out and off she went like a bullet out of a gun so obviously feeling much better
