my dad has bought a 5yo 16.1hh tb mare. She's hunted, done local SJ and XC. She has raced but was rubbish but previous owner worked hard with her and she is now well-schooled and jumping well. She hacks out alone or in company. My Dad rode her (while on the trial) round a course of showjumps she never stopped/ran out/refused, she cleared them all, not sure what height they were to be honest but probably 2ft6ish knowing my dad. Owner said as the mare was young she didnt want to rush her but has jumped higher. My Dad jumped in/out water with her and few XC fences. She did all this without questioning it. She's good on roads when he hacks her. He paid 5K for her (without tack/rugs). Do you think he was ripped off or is this about right?

Probably could get similar for cheaper - but if your dad is happy with her and had the money to spend, and she continues to be as genuine as you describe, then I wouldn't say you were "ripped-off".

Who cares. You sound like you have a fantastic little mare there and that's all that matters.

I paid over the odds for my pony but would not part with her for any amount now. Im sure yours will also be worth her weight in gold

Thanks guys... I was a bit surprised when he first told me he'd found a TB, i said to him nicely i didn't think a TB was right for him but she seems such a lovely genuine horse. She is ridden in a waterford duth gag though which is what the previous owner gave to my Dad and didn't mention the fact that it is a severe bit!! (my Dad had never heared of a waterford before and believed her). I'm going to work with the mare on a different bit, she doesn't need that bit in the menage as you could put your granny on her she's that calm and sensible! but when you canter through open fields she's strong hence the waterford, also, previous owner was very petite! So if anyone has any bright ideas as to which bit i should try with her that would be great as i don't like to idea of her being ridden in a waterford dutch gag even though she may be strong when in fast work....
