on your horse's character?

Like the way you are with them, does that influence their personality?

Was just thinking, my friend has a mare and filly (not related) that are so similar it's scarey

Has she made them like this or do you think she picked another horse with that same sort of temperament?

Both my horses are so different, Donnegan is a thug and is out for himself where-as Monty is a gentle giant who wouldn't dream of hurting anyone.
Did I just learn by my mistakes?

What about you?
Are your horses different from past horses?

Hi, I always seem to have mares, and I have got on with all of them luckily. I now own 2 horses, a bay mare who I have had for just over 5 yrs and a chestnut mare who I have owned for about 6 weeks. They both look out for me and are both loving and have good manners. I suppose that you are drawn to a certain personality when you go and look at a horse to buy. I have been told that I am lucky to have 2 mares, who are both `nice people`.

I think, to some extent, you can influence their characters.

A while ago, I had two ponies - both were calm, reliable, sensible. Then I put one on loan (stayed on same yard) - the loaner was a bit neurotic and nervy, and the pony she was loaning became very jumpy and nervy within no time! When he came back to me, after a couple of weeks, he was back to his old sensible laid-back self!

Nothing else had changed in his routine - he was in with the same horses, at the same yard, eating the same feed, etc, the only change was the handler.

Gosh, if I thought I was responsible for my lad's character I'd shoot myself!!! He's a complete LOON!!

My mare's quite nice, though, and I've had her for much longer, so I really don't think his daft ways are all my fault.

It's very strange but every horse I have owned from a baby all seem to have the same character.
Slightly grumpy and very attached to me, and very suspicious of new people until they get to know them. Very talkative, Axey is always neighing at me, and Rocky was the same.

It's very important to me to have a good influence on the horses I own/ride. I would hate to make a horse 'worse' either by overall manners, feeding or riding etc.

The horse I ride (April!) has a bad history of kicking and biting and being a general nightmare to handle but I have managed to practically get rid of all of that now and she is actually very sweet! She is still occasionally grumpy and frequently opinionated but that doesn't bother me

. She's my biggest achievement so far and I'm terribly proud of her.

She only accepts about 4 people though... me and also her new owners and my mum. She is still suspicious of other people unless at a show when she puts on a big act and is amazingly sociable LOL

I would hate to ride a horse that didn't respect and like me so all of mine have been anthromorphosised a bit into big pets (and are a bit spoiled too probably!!

I love them all to bits

my old mare was very bolshy withother horses and people until she got to know them. my present horse however is so laid back he;s almost horizontal, nothing really fazes him. Altho he has a abit of sly side to his character, he likes to quietly wind other horses up!!

I hope I have an affect on their personalities.
Both my youngsters were skitty, nervous and anxious when I first had them.

Now they're a lot more relaxed and confidant.
I think if your calm around them it will affect their outlook on life and thus their personality

I do believe that your attitude and handling influences them, but obviously won't completely rule their behaviour.

I have had my horse for 7 weeks and people at the yard have said that he's like a horsey version of me! I think that I was attracted to his personality right from the advert stage, he's the sweetest horse I know and we seem to get on really well even though I haven't had him long, so far so good!

Not exactly character in my case but I am well aware I have a very specific 'type'. I love sharp complicated chestnuts and while often they aren't the most suitable I can't bring myself to like other horses as much and have resigned myself to a life of mind games with horses. I wonder what a psychyatrist(sp?) would make of me.

Ok, but I lied. Mine are all happy, fairly sensible, and seem happy, although they all have very different personalities.
