..........with your horse that your over protective (Yes you wrap him/her up in cotton wall from ears to hooves!)......or your hard and think what the hell he is only horse he can go out in all weathers with now't on.....or pile the rugs high, and do you think there could be something wrong with him or if his slightly lame and no heat or swelling wait 24 hours then you will call the vet out.....or call the vet straight away(As your mobile has direct access to the vet,as he gave you his mobile number!!!!) Me I'm a in "betweenie" sort of owner after years of owning the TB mare of "fragile china" that broke at the slightest knock!...the only worry that I have with my cob is will his shoes be on and if not he won't limp in like his hoof was amputated........so what owner are you!?

PS- this is just abit of fun post [*].......and _OC_is nosey and bored at work!

I'm in the middle too. I accept he's a horse so will get into scrapes in the field etc, but I do rug him - not exessively though! I don't put boots on him and wrap him in cottonwool.

I'm inbetween.
I worry about injuries because he is a clumsy idiot and the slightest knock seems to put him off work for months. Because of this I will only now turn him out with my friends horse, which is fine we have moved into our own seperate paddock. And I will restrict his turn him out if we get the bad mud like we saw this winter.
But on the other hand I don't fuss over rugging and stuff. Hes a bit porky and I can be often heard to say "fat lump - it wont hurt him to lose a bit of weight" when its teeming down. I am not completely heartless though - he does have lots of natural shelter in the field

I'm an inbetweener like you - I think it's an advantage of owning a cobbier type, because you know they WILL be fine without rugs, but sometimes you like them to be snug and dry.
A cut that would cripple a finer horse will heal itself, and their sturdy legs means they can cope with a few knocks... that tummy ache is from overdosing on grass, and will disappear if you make them walk a bit...

I do use over-reach boots and brushing boots when riding, so I must care a little bit

I'm going more towards the over-protective side. My horse won't wear boots in the field apart from today as she cut herself jumping out yesterday so will have brushing boots and over-reaches on and will be sedated! Usually she only wears boots for SJ in front and XC all round, but I'm far too worried about her now she's had this major lameness so she'll be in wraps or SMBs in front most of the time. I rug her far too much but I do have a bit of an obsession with rugs

She also now has a smart new set of magnetic stable boots as she has been getting stiff on box rest. I also give her too many supplements "just in case". I do have my vet's direct mobile number but only because I complained last time she failed to ring me back (my horse was bleeding fairly constantly and it took over 24 hours for her to call me back). Other vet (for lameness) won't give me his number as he knows what I'm like now! Ok maybe I am over-protective! You wouldn't have thought that my horse survived in the field on her own for years would you...?

but hey, it's not doing her any harm and it's how I want to spend my money, doing anything I can to keep her happy and healthy.

Think Im an "inbetweener" (sp) too
wink.gif
. Im not worried if he comes in with the odd nick or cut (came in with a little cut under his eye but wasnt a problem) from playing with his mates but I do like him to have some toys in his stable coz I dont like to think of him being bored at bedtime, he has loads of hay but prefers his ball

I'm in between. I think to molly coddle a horse can ruin some of them. i'm quite matter of fact with him now and he has more respect for me because of it - may just be cause he's a TB though x

I try not to be too over protective, but my horse was kicked the day after I bought him and fractured his splint bone. He was off for 3 months after that and now I go into a major panic when people tie up with their horses bum pointing towards my horse, or when a new horse goes out in the field....I try not to over rug though and I have managed to wean myself off stable bandaging every night!!!

Yes......very interesting,I was like that when I owned the "I'll fall to bit's if you touch me!" TB mare, I got brillant at bandaging, and spent more time tending, rather than riding as spent 50% of my time at the vets in the last 4 years of owning her out of the 12 years! Used lot's of cotton wool for wrapping!

Nope thats why i own a Welsh Pony! Two winters ago i had her in a duvet in the winter months then after she bit me (very out of character for her) i figured it was her way of telling me to get lost so this winter i left her naked all winter and she had a fab coat and was a much happier pony! She has never been to vets (touch wood) in seven years ive had her so i dont worry too much she can hold her own.

I used to be much more overprotective than I am now. However, have been in bits all day and tears this evening over her being bloomin lame!!!

Silly me.
