when its really really heavy rain do you turn out? my horses normally go out for the day and then in for the night so my gut instinct would be to turn them out as normal but today evryone on yard kept theirs in so i felt well guilty and now wondering what to do tomorrow!

mine live out so they have been out in this weather - theyd prefer to stand in the middle of their field getting wet than stand in their shelters.
the new one however had a bath and i wanted to clip her so she stayed in today, but shes out tonight with her rug on - its blowing a gale here and raining

Nah. Mine went out, with a neck cover.

She'll be going out again tomorrow too as we have good natural shelter and she is carrying plenty enough condition.

Got to keep my hay bill down lol!

i do although mine went out slightly later as it was horrendous and proceeded to gallop flat out round the field.if i kept them in all day and night they would be a nightmare as kept at home and no facilities to school.its the lesser of 2 evils and as long as theyre rugged up and have hay id rather they were out for a few hours.im already sick of this weather though.

Mine go out everyday - in fact they are still out 24/7 as I like to delay mucking out as long as possible!!

Was very glad of that today as I appear to have swine flu so feel like poo so the last thing I needed today was putting two neds in and out.

We did have a few people bring theirs in for a couple of hours to 'get them out of the rain'

don't really understand that as they had been out in it all night and it stopped here by lucnhtime.

mine goes out regardless BUT I have the luxury of keeping her at home and her stable yard is in her field. I leave her stable door open during the day and she comes and goes as she pleases - she had been in the today.

My TB lives out and i was worried about him this morning so got soaked putting him a lovely big pile of hay in his lovely warm bedded shelter and did he appreciate it?
No he walked out into the rain and grazed quite happily!
As long as they are snug in a rug and happy to be out i would put out

Yes, mine goes out - she is waterproof

Everyone else fannied about debating whether to turn out or not, I was told in no uncertain terms that if she galloped about she'd have to come in again, but she's a horse - she needs to go out, it's what she does every day. She has a rug with a neck, and hedges to keep out of the wind should she choose to - I can understand wanting to preserve the grazing and not wanting them to charge about, but equally I don't get why anyone (and Im talking anyone at my yard, not generally!) would suddenly want to keep their horse standing in all day just because of a bit of wind and rain.

No, when there is really heavy rain no horse is out (YO trying to protect the fields I guess).

I must say that Rauti absolutely HATES rain and if he is out and it starts to rain he goes mental (passaging by the gate, calling desperately to be allowed back in)

My two are out all day & in at night whatever the weather, although strange how my cob wasn't impressed by the wind & rain when I hacked him out but oblivious to it when grazing later!

Yep, horse is out every day - although went out a little later this morning. Rugged up, well fed and warm - and in by 3.30. He was happy as Larry!

Yep the baggage is out in all weathers. She is carrying plenty of condition (read porky

) so will be warm enough without a rug and if I know her is stood in the middle of the field happily grazing

well when i brought the TB in he was toasty warm in his rug but was ready to come in (he came to the gate and whinnied at me
laugh.gif
)...but he wasn't messing about at the gate...so think i'll put them out tomorrow!

Yep, and as I'm a mean mummy, he was naked, all night, and all day :-) IMO he's a horse, he's carrying plenty of podge and he loads of natural shelter - he'c not coming in at night until he absolutely has to - and isn't fed or hayed yet either... Im so mean!

Yes ours are still out 24/7. We put a middleweight rug with a higher neck on the elderly cob yesterday evening and the other two have good coats. I was a bit concerned that the rain didn't ease off as forecast but when they came in at tea-time they were absolutely fine, obviously wet but plenty warm enough. We put them back out with hay and the rain has stopped now and the wind has dropped. They'll be fine. Ours are at home though, so it's up to us what we do with the land.

there were only 3 turned out at my yard - mine was one of them!! I like him to be out whatever the weather, my 2 mares are roughed off rugless and living out this year - and do you know what?? they didn't melt nor blow away!! some horses at my yard will have been in for well over 36 hours cooped up in a 12x12 by 7am tomorrow morning.....not right IMHO

No, ours stay in if it is really bad weather (like today!) I put them out this afternoon but they were back by the gate within a couple of hours lookong cold so I got them back in.
