Do you use a stud girth? Should you use a stud girth?

I think I'm at a critical point with my horse equipment as it seems I have most things that I need!! My boyfriend is getting moody that I haven't asked for anything for Christmas so I was thinking about things that I don't have.

I have never needed a stud girth. I doubt I'll need one at the moment as both my baby horses are barefoot but they probably won't stay that was when the spring comes.

Is it worth having one? Do you jump in one? I've always thought they are mostly for people jumping big fences (not me!) but I've done some past HHO searching and it seems some people always jump in one even if they have no studs in. Is this you?

As you can see I'm clutching at straws with regards to Christmas presents!!! My boyfriend did just say he would buy me a new horse but think its getting a bit extreme!!

Should of added another reason why I'm asking, baby horse jumping photos made me wonder if she should have one at some point...

my horse has stud holes but i rarely use them right now  the farrier thought i was stupid asking for them last time (i used them through the summer but now everything is indoors) but i thought you never know if i might need them.... anyway unless your horse really tucks his legs up when he jumps, i didn't have one at the beginning of the summer and my instructor said i would be fine as i was only jumping about 2'6/2'9 and my horse is 10 and doesn't tuck up for that height, however, if your horse does (usually baby horses do) then I would say its better to be safe than sorry

I mainly jump on a surface but both of mine are shod.
However, i ALWAYS use a stud girth.
It's usually covered in a few scrapes or scratches at the end of doing any jumping and I often hear them clout the stud girth - i'd hate that to be their skin.

Mine always wear one because it saves having 2 girths! They do wear studs in the summer and are very careful and all aimed at 1.30s. Only problem is new saddle has long straps so I need a new short one and there's no second hand ones on eBay at the mo and I'm very poor right now!

No, but may invest in one for when I start jumping again. I have never studded in front, but he's very tidy so he'd probably appreciate it :)

I always use one whether studded or not. Especially with young horses, I'd hate to put them in a position where they're punished for tucking up, and don't see wearing one causes any problems just in case.

I do stud up and I jump up to 1m10 but never felt the need to put a stud girth on him as he just doesn't tuck up his legs that much. If in doubt he just jumps a bit higher.

I have a similar dilemma, pony is not shod, most likley never will be but I saw one save a pony from a nasty scrape on his belly when the rider messed up a xc fence so now I want one incase he does similar. And he is very neat in front.......

I always do, when jumping. Mine is covered in scrapes and scratches, and I would hate B to 'punish' himself by scratching his chest or banging himself for trying to be uber careful!

I had one and used it on Pilfer for a bit but he never jumped as well in it as in a normal girth- he felt a bit restricted?

Not used on any since and have had some really tidy horses and some with really loose legs- not felt like I/they have missed out on anything by not wearing one.

Although Vinnie now has a Tekna girth, which is so dramatically shaped, it is halfway to a studgirth!

Why don't you see if you can borrow one when you next jump and work out if there are any scratches on it from your horse's hooves.
Instead of a whole stud girth you might also want to look at the Albion ones which you can velcro to your normal girth.

I think they are a fad unless u use studs! I'm envious that u can't think of anything u want/need tho.... My list is the length of my arm!

Eh they are a safety item and you don't need studs for your horse to harm himself when jumping. I have seen just as many scratches on my mare's studgirth jumping indoors with no studs as with them in the summer. They are a precaution not a fad

As above. I rarely used one previously, or only on horses that were very neat in front. I bought a new stud girth to go with monoflap saddle and the very first time I used it, jumping smallish fences in arena with no studs in, it got a serious scrape from a shoe, and that was a horse who I didn't think tucked up much. Now nothing here leaves the floor without a stud girth on. No way do I want to dissuade them from tucking up.

Ask someone to punch you repeatedly in the same place in your stomach - then tell me if it hurts the next day!

Even if the horse doesn't have studs in, it can still give itself a nasty bruise with its own feet.

Yes - my horses wear stud girths when they jump, regardless of whether I think they tuck up 'enough' or not! :)

Thanks everyone. I think a stud girth might go on to my Christmas list then :)

Any recommendations? I'll do a search on here too...

:)

I have the Albion slip on stud girth, its lovely

wow, best tell my horse that. I get through a stud girth ever 6 months or so, he really tucks up, I can hear him smacking it when we jump  shreds the leather and the little clip that holds on the martingale gets pulled off!

My other horse doesn't tuck up but got him a stud girth to go on his new mono flap and then he belly surfed over a trakenher and now that is scraped. wouldn't jump without one now, studs or not

I find stud girths an interesting topic and personally have never used one.

The only way a horse needs one is if they jump with their forearm down and then tuck their lower legs up.
If they are really sharp in front and jump with their forearm up (ie: knees round their chin) then they will never reach far enough back to hit themselves from the girth backwards and therefore don't need a stud girth.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion! Just because there are scuffs on the stud girth doesn't mean they would have hurt themselves had they not been wearing it! I didn't say there was anything wrong with them, was just presenting my opinion!

No but to say they are a fad implies those who use them do so only for fashion:

I do use them; every time I leave the floor. If it takes no more time and does no harm, why would I not when it could save discomfort or injury ?

i tried - mare potested - didnt try again

i do know of some horses who really do need them - but mine has actually never caught herself with studs so i dont worry.

i do think a lot of people use them for fashion - as with 5 point breastplates etc - buti have no problem with that - people can do what they want as they dont harm the horse...dont get me started on the flashe fad though LOL

I said they are a fad unless u are using studs
If I was using studs I wouldn't jump without one
Just my opinion

Which one knackers his stud girth - Cow Pony?

OP yes I would always jump with one. I got a new one under a year ago and we haven't jumped that much this year - certainly not with studs as limited outings. However was cleaning it at lunchtime and shocked by how deep some of the scratches and grooves are. I would imagine you could get a serious injury if you jumped with studs in and no studgirth but a shoe could do a fair bit of damage too.

Does anyone have a Rhinegold one? I have the opportunity to get one trade price. Also anyone know where you can get a cheap short stud girth? When I win the lottery I am going to get fairfax ones :D

Sure, but he probably wouldn't pick his feet up so neat the next time.

Yes, just like OP's picture, snappy knees!

I think they are a must for a careful horse especially, this time last year id never used one then my horse came in from a lesson dripping with blood under where a stud girth would protect and found a huge chunk of skin that wouldnt stop bleeding that needed 20 staples and 2 weeks box rest to heal.

So for me they arent a fad defo a must after seeing an injury that could have easily been prevented with a stud girth
