I used to wear comb spurs on my old horse and i carried a whip. On the horses i have the moment i dont fel the need to carry a whip. I have a small (tiny!) jumping whip for shows with harry but thats becuase i have taught him to move away from it in jump offs (if i lay it across his left shoulder he turns right.
I use a dressage whip for flatwork schooling and dressage comps and carry a short whip when hacking (although rarely use it). I never carry one when jumping as I don't need any additional aids to go forwards LOL!
The only time I use spurs is at dressage comps.
Always and never! I always carry a whip to back my leg aid up because the RS ponies take the mick! and i got taught if they dont listen to you when you steer them an they want to go the other way you tap them on the shoulder! But i have to e careful if i whip hilde because she can buck!
thanks for ur replies guys! i was just interested, as i know lots of people do things differently to one another....personally, i dont do either on a day to day basis, but occasionally during dressage lessons i feel i need a bit of a back up (tho it tends to depend on mare's time of month LOL). when i used to jump, i carried a very short little jockey stick, just for the odd slap down the neck when she spooked at flowers/people/speakers/anything-remotely-abnormal on the way into the ring! i bought a schooling whip when i took up dressage, but my mare has such tickly sides i tend to use it for beating up the chickens, not for riding purposes......
Depends what I'm riding. I always ride with a whip - schooling for flatwork and hacking and a short one for jumping.
No spurs on my youngster but would ride in them with an older stuffy horse (or on my last horse - a warmblood).

Always and never. However the whip is never used on the horse, I carry a schooling whip to try and keep cars that little bit further away from us.

I do the same thing as you with my schooling whip. I think people are scared it will scratch their car but they definately give a wider berth. Also handy to whack any stray dogs if they bug my horse. (I have asked the dog warden to sort it out so don't shout at me)
always and sometimes. I like to hack out with a whip, just makes me feel more secure i guess and i have become quite nifty at opening gates with it
I always have spurs in my pocket whenever/wherever i ride her, if i feel she needs them i will put them on, but only if she needs them and she only needs them on for about 5 minutes and then i can take them back off again!
When hacking Septre I needed to carry a schooling whip as she would nap/play up, but would be better behaved if I had the whip (a light tap would get her moving again). Schooling and lessons, I would carry one all the time- I felt it was better to give her a light flick with the whip than have to boot her pony club style if she was being nappy.
I dont like carrying them though- get myself into a right tangle and I have no idea how I manage it.
I always carry a whip but never wear spurs. I use a schooling whip all the time well not smacking him all the time, Ben can get behind the leg so I flick him and hes fine.
I use a show cane for showing but thats for image not for use.
With my last mare I carried a whip and wore spurs all the time because she was naturally lazy and quite dead to the leg when I got her, and I don't like to kick all the time.
With my horse before that I very rarely carried a whip and never wore spurs because he was very very sensitive and he simply didn't need either, he was always very responsive just to my leg.
So I guess to me it depends on the horse. On most horses I would carry a whip just incase as a back up, but generally I wouldn't wear spurs unless they were necessary.
I put always and always, although I don't ever hack in spurs I would always wear them for schooling a horse trained above a certain level, normally about elementary but it does vary from horse to horse. I don't use spurs to make my horse go, I use them to give more refined aids.
