Yes, alot of people tell me not to bother with gamgee with fleece ones as they can make the legs too hot.... Now i dont know whats best. x

I always use fibergee/gamgee when bandaging as it prevents pressure points etc...as good as the best person is at bandaging not every pull round is even pressure, and this can create no end of problems, especially if horse has to wear them for hours at a time
I don't really like bandages for exercising, although plenty of people do. Is there any particular reason you're considering using them rather than boots?

completely agree with you PF,i only bandage at other owners request,i use sport boots these days!
I also refuse to bandage a horses leg if owner has no gamgee/fibergee,far to easy for the fleece bandages to wrinkle under a layer

[/ QUOTE ]I used bandages on my old boy for 14 years, always likes them better then boots, more support i think. But i always used gamgee with my elastic bandages. As you can imagine, after 14 years they needed to go in the bin and i bought some new fleece ones for my new lad. Just didnt know if gamgee was still needed as i have had mixed views x
i have never bandaged a horse before i will admit, so with the elastic typey exercise bandages do you not need to use gamgee or do you have to use it whenever you bandage?

Yes i would say you need to use fibergee etc, especially with the elasticated ones,as said above because they elasticated you put them on to provide support and to do that they need to be pulled to a certain degree,fibergee/gamgee,helps level out the pressure that can be caused from this, also more so with the fleece bandages with no give,i have found they do not shape to the horses leg and end up wrinkled on the under layer
I also believe...may be wrong that bandages expand and contract when wet???
thanks for that hadfos, im more than happy with my bog standard brushing boots, certainly for now anyway id love to get the premier equine ones that cover the fetlock as well but too poor for that currently lol
it was more a general wondering and i think boots offer more support and protection nowadays anyway but i have been told i have to have a set of stable bandages and fibregee/gamgee for college (so i bought a smart navy set lol) so i though i may as well have some idea of how to use them

I don't really understand how bandages support tendons. If anyone would like to explain, I'm all ears
I don't use boots for support, but for protection against strike injuries
I bandage my mare for exercise, but I have these really thick polo/stable bandages that I use. I think if I put gamgee under them her legs would drop off! Plus she only wears them for half an hour at a time, I have never had any problems. I use them because my mare has poor circulation and when I go to ride she has been stood in for a few hours so I like to keep her legs warm or they fill up. They do go down during exercise but I am a bit neurotic
However for stable bandaging I ALWAYS ensure that she has fibergee underneath.
i bandage my mare for schooling. apparently (i have no idea as i wasn't really paying attention!) my trainer told me, there are two veins or arteries in the horses leg, that come close to the surface and when bandaging, these need to be covered up and supported, otherwise the bandages have no use.
im sorry for my really detailed response. i think i was in a bad mood that day as my trainer was very pushy and i just wanted to go home (haha) but hey ho!! Oh! and i use fleece straight on to the leg (dont go mad!!), i have no reason for this, ive just always been told not to bother!
I always bandage straight onto the leg for exercise bandages... for stable bandages I would also use some fibregee or gamgee underneath because they are on for longer.
Thankyou for all the reply's, im still none the wiser lol, i think its definetley just personal preference rather then a right or wrong. Ive asked in competition too, to get some more views on this x
If you use bandages/boots for support of tendons etc then I'm afraid you are away with the fairies!. Any vet will tell you that boots & bandages provide no support for tendons. Boots/bandages provide some protection against self injury from brushing, over reaching & hitting fence poles but otherwise that's it.
Well gamgees are to prevent the bandages from tightening at certain spots on the legs .. eg stabling overnight. Everyone I know exercises without the gamgees .
depends on the reason for bandaging and what bandages used. Mine has a tendon problem behind i use either polo wraps or training combi bandages both direct to leg one main reason for not using gamge is so that can bandage right round fetlock can't do this so easily with gamge as gets too bulky and restrics movment. As to weather it supports??? a hving torn the ligs in my ankle i can safly say it was a hell of a lot better bandaged than anything else i found support wraps too hot and limited movemnt too much, so how knows. I dont really like sport med boots that wrap round as had too may tripping with them on and often seem to slip.
using elastic bandgaes just round cannon is just silly as bruhing boot do the same job. For me if to protect from knocks then boots but for support(?)/injurys polo wraps on own traveling and stable then padding underneath. there is a time and place for everything
