Does anyone here use rosehips - any opinions on their use? Thinking specifically as vitamin/min supplement for grass kept, non fed horse?

Every year I mean to collect and dry them to use. And every year I leave it too late and the birds have them! I have a friend who swears by them and feeds them to grass kept horses, although she uses a hanful of chaff to feed them.

Exactly as above! :)

My horses are kept lean due to the mare being prone to putting on A LOT of weight from our grazing. I don't feed them anything so looking at a natural alternative to balance their vits and minerals. Rather than say, having to feed a chaff etc just to get something like topspec/BC etc into them.

Not for the horses but for myself!

They are meant to be very good for joints... I would probably for the horse when she gets into work, but for now they're mine!

Me too!
I made a few pints of rosehip syrup last year, probably will do again this year, there's loads of very large rosehips growing on Kenley Common next to where I live so why not make use of them.

I take it for iritis (which is known as moon blindness in a horse). It's a symptom of rheumatism and rosehip is supposed to be very good for it. This is the one that did well in clinical trials. http://litozin.co.uk/litozin/litozinhome.cfm

I think it's helping me but it could just be wishful thinking. But, given my symptoms and that the alternative is steroid therapy, worth a try.

Yup I feed whole ones from the above supplier, also milk thistle and magnesium oxide as I treat my fatty as if she’s laminitic although she never has been. Mine was unrugged all winter and she has the shiniest coat on the yard and was the only one on my block not to have the sniffles when a bug went round. She’s healthy from the inside out and I’m convinced these natural supplements help.

LOL that sounds nice as well PD :D

Thanks JoelB that's the reason for mine too, I have decided to treat all my horses as if they were lammi (one ISH and 2xwelshies) which so far has done them all the world of good. Just need to balance out the vits/mins now.

My iridologist recommended whole rosehips along with milk thistle and calendula. My boy loves them. Ive got a great book The Herbal Horse by Hilary Self Page (Hilton Herbs founder) and it's got some great suggestions for herbal and more natural alternatives. Oh and my boy gets nettles too - great blood tonic and kidney cleanser at this time of year! :-)

Yes - I've put my horse on the seaweed and rosehip supplement to see if it will help with her feet, and also as it is meant to be good for joints too.

I started taking a rosehip supplement for my own arthritis a few months ago and it has transformed my joints, and been far more effective than any of the drugs I have had prescribed for me. I didn't expect it to make any difference but it really has and I feel better than I have for at least the last 10 years. No idea whether it would make any difference to a horse's joints though!

I always point my horse in the direction of them if our riding so he can self select if interested..

Just wondered if may be good for my partner as he has back legs/back/joints etc. know good for horses but hadnt thought about him. I've got a few herbs and essential oils books always useful to find out about solutions we can offer our horses themselves to naturally medicate.. I seem to forget about me! And partner!

Yes both of my horses joint supp contains rosehips, find them very effective. The joint supps called joint eclipse from simple systems.

Big ingredient in arthritis supplements. Pony will eat these fresh, even tho he's very fussy about new things. I dunno if it works as an arthritis preventative, I used them as a treat.
