Was grooming at an ODE yesterday and it got me pondering! Some riders just seem to wear a collared rugby shirt / polo neck tshirt with BP over the top. Some wear the stretchy 'base layer' type of tops with BP over the top. Both with no stock.
Some wear the base layer type but also had a stock on, which looked v smart. But surely you need a stock collar? The only way round it I can find is the event shirts from treehouse which look like a base layer but with incorporated bib and collar. But they are very pricey!
Then finally (!) some people (I think Phoebe Buckley does this) wear a collared rugby shirt, along with a stock. I have just tried on my stock shirt under a rugby shirt which seems to give that effect, but I imagine I would get rather warm!

So basically, what tops do you guys wear for xc, and if you wear a stock, how do you do it?! :D :D Thanks

I wear my mountain horse stretchy base later ( mountain horse on the arm in writing ) then my bright turquoise blue musto polo . Look on my Pics . I get a huge amount of comments on how nice it looks !

I was always taught to wear a properly tied stock for xc as it provided some support to the neck. Might be a load of old tosh but always make my daughter wear one!!

I've heard that too, also I do think it looks really smart. What kind of shirt does you daughter wear though?

Horselove92 - The turquoise looks lovely :)

I wear my base layer with stock on, its the same as I wear for dr and sj meaning I just swap my tweed for body protector to go xc. Its a plain white long sleeved top I wear with blue and white spotty stock and then just pop on a blue and white hatsilk for XC. :-)

The base layer was £4.99 off eBay, its sold as being a unisex breathable base layer for gym/training/cycling/etc - doesn't need to be a fancy "eventing" specific one!

I don't agree you need a stock shirt, a correctly tied stock will be secure and firm enough to stay in place whatever you have on underneath, don't need to be buttoned to the shirt. And like the above poster I was brought up fed on PC mantra that it would act as some sort of neck support. :-)

She wears a sports skin or a treehouse event shirt.. But with her body protector and air jacket you can only really see the arms.

I'd wear a stock as I think it looks really smart, but I just get too hot :o Whilst it may look smart I find dr and sj wear too stuffy and am glad to whip it all off :D

Oh, I see :) I just imagined there would be a weird gap between the stock and the round neck of the top if you know what I mean?!

I think it looks really smart with a stock but do you still wear a stock pin with it?

I was just thinking what if the pin came undone under the body protector?

Never thought about the pin! She still keeps it on I think, but may review that ....

My top has quite a high neck, not like a normal round neck casual t shirt.

And yes I do have pins in it, three small safety pins (to get a really neat smart flat stock) and a normal stock pin - I've never had a pin come undone in years of hunting in a stock so I have never even considered this would be an issue :-)

Yes me too. I am never hugely worried about having a proper stock shirt for XC anything goes as long as there isn't a massive gap of skin showing between the collar of the shirt and the stock.

I only have a stock if someone is there to help tie it as I like my xc stocks really firm and secure! I just button my rugby top up to hide the join

agree with this, it does offer some support to the next; hence people wear stocks for hunting as well as for xc. Although, saying that, I don't always wear one for xc, depends on whether I am in a rush/remember to wash it and bring it with me :p if I don't wear my stock I will wear my sj shirt that is designed to look like a stock from a distance i.e. buttons up tight around the neck (isn't like a tie shirt) and wear it under my xc coloured top, so it looks smart :)

I wear my stock shirt (with stock) then but a rugby top over the top but I do take the pin out, cause that could hurt if you had a nasty fall and I'm a worrier haha! I only really do it for speed as I'm usually rising another horse after so just take my rugby top off and pop my jacket back on.

well im already wearing a stock and stock shirt after the dressage and sj, so i just pull my xc top over the top of it. My xc shirt is the Ariat Hunter Rugby Shirt :)

Thanks for the replies everyone! Guess it would depend on the weather as to whether i could cope with wearing 2 tops! :)

I have a sleeveless stock shirt! :D Wear this under jackert for dress/sj, then stick a stretchy thin long sleeved top over this for XC (and of course BP).

I wear my stock shirt and stock user my xc top. I have one of PE stock shirts and its short sleeved and polo shirt type material with a bib and collar so I don't get too got and its really stretchy. Think it looks really smart too.

I wear a stock shirt with a stock, a rugby shirt over that and my back protector on top :)

I have a neck brace/stock that I put on for xc as I find I always get whip lash if I come off. .I wear with a Rugby shirt and once you have bp on theres no skin showing!

I wear a Tagg short sleeved top as its designed for wearing with a stock. I have a long sleeved Polo shirt with my colours that I wear over the top. I dont use a pin as my BP keeps the stock in place.

I wore a Musto stock t-shirt with stock, I pull out the stock pin and leave the safety pins in place, nothing worse than stock tails smacking you in the face! I then wore my rugby shirt ontop and then BP. If it was very hot I would just ditch the rugby shirt.
