My yard owner come to the yard today with his dog, my horses just chased the dog over and over again, kinda felt sorry for him. Out of 6 only 2 didn't chase him. Does anyone else horses do this.
Yep! my colt almost had his nose nipped by a jack russell - he wouldn't leave it alone untill Jack russell growled and went to bite his nose
My cob chases dogs, sheep and pigs!! with her ears flat back and teeth bared
When Badger was at my mums he didn't chase mums dogs but totally had it in for my pointer!! Would chase her/try and stamp on her in the field and try and bite her if she ran past his stable. He's a funny bugger though.
Mine chases anything smaller than him that runs- sheep, dogs, pheasants... Bullocks...! As long As it runs, and he has backup, he'll chase it.
He found last year's bullocks most entertaining- they fought back! Slightly less entertained was me seeing my two year old hunter headbutting the biggest bullock time after time... Learned behavior- he'd seen them doing it. He has since been removed from them- I'd quite like him intact for the coming show season!
Yes! My youngster is terrible for shoo-ing my mums dog away from the herd, or trying to play with him, even if the dog is just passing by minding his own business (he's a v good dog around livestock, generally just ignores them)!
My youngster even chases people if he doesn't know them. My OHs cousin lives up the road from our yard, and she popped in to have a look at my mums new horse. She, and her brother, walked through the youngsters field, and he flat out galloped straight at them! He then bucked a circle around them, bounced like a puppy, and shot off bronking and farting - her brother did a runner to the fence, didn't realise the electic was on and got a sharp shock to the top of his head (he threw himself under it!) whilst OHs horsey cousin stood peeing herself laughing!
He's like a little lamb with us, so all I can think is he was either protecting "his" (my) mare, or trying to play?!
I feel better in that if anyone wanted to steal him, they would have to get hold of him first!
I had taken my dogs with me to the stables one morning. It was 6am and pitch black.
I had turned my horses out and heard them go down into the second field so felt it was safe to allow the dogs in the first field.
They were sniffing around when my Arab (who after all HADN'T gone away from the gate) suddenly appeared in the darkness and, spooked by the dogs, fled at speed.
The Wolf, driven mad by his prey drive chased after him and they both disappeared into the blackness while I stood helpless and terrified
I imagined all number of horrors happening to my beloved Arab.....
A few minutes later The Wolf returned to me, full of his own importance. I was furious and just about to set out to find my Arab and make sure he was OK when I felt the ground begin to shake....
I could hear hooves and looked into the darkness to find the entire herd of horses galloping towards us with my Arab at the front.
He was back...and he'd brought all his mates
The Wolf ran back through the gate and scooted behind me with his tail between his legs
Yes both mine do, any dog on my yard needs to be quick on their feet
When my own dog comes to the yard with me he sits in next door field, he has learnt a lesson too many times! He is quite clever though, he keeps his distance while I muck out, do hay etc. but as soon as headcollar is safely secured on horses, he comes out of hiding and takes up central position on yard..........he has more faith in my leading and holding on skills than I do
My pony used to chase our elderly border collie, but when he was younger he would regularly try to round the horses up. Both pony and TB are brilliant and unfased with the spangle and terrier.
My standard poodle does flying leaps in front of the Connemara's nose until the pony gives in and chases him, they look fantastic. The dog doesn't trust the mares, usually they ignore each other but he's well aware the kicks and bucks are only half kidding. They all chase, not friendly either, any dog they don't know. And they chase deer too.
I discovered only yesterday that my horse chases deer out of his field - poor deer suddenly realised it had made a big mistake as it was rounded on by him. I think my horse was worried that it would eat his grass
My stables are in a grass 'yard' and my coblets chased one of my dogs round and round the stables. I used to have a lurched and her and my old mare used to play chase round the field and I swear they used to race, they would both go to the bottom and the field then race back up it together, it was really funny to watch.
Not mine but a horse at my old yard chased after my old almost deaf dog years ago. She didn't hear him approaching in a menacing way and good job I hollered as loud as I could and as she turned to me, she saw the gelding out the corner of her eye and scooted away just in time as it tried to stamp on her. If she hadn't seen it, she would have been badly injured.
Another newly gelded pony killed a kitten that must have gone into his stable overnight.
They are wolves or potential predators to some horses, but they become accustomed to them being around provided they don't get chased or hurt by them. Some horses are still in tune with their insticts more than others so always beware new horses around your dogs.
Yes! My TB chases peoples dogs along the fence next to the footpath, doesn't chase my dog though.
She also chases sheep.. or did until one of them butted her nose! she was quite put out by that lol
My late greyhound would go into the field with the youngsters and challenge them to a race!
The babies would run after him but they weren't really chasing him nor would he chase them.
No, but he does find them utterly fascinating . . . he'll turn himself inside out to get a good look at them . . . I suspect it's a hangover from his hunting days . . . bless him.
We had a puppy killed by a horse at our yard in the field. Everyone walked their dogs in the horses fields (they have a public right of way through them), we were seeing to my youngster at the time and another horse chased after our puppy flat out with ears back and teeth bared. Puppy ran for his life but unfortunately was just not quick enough! We were completely helpless. The horse caught up with him and promptly stamped on his head and killed him. We were only thankful it was instant and he did not suffer.
NEVER will i walk our dogs in a field with horses or cattle again - lesson was learnt BIG TIME
