The recent fight between our two got my thinking!

Lance is top dog in the field, Beau keeps trying to be the boss, they both come in together, and Beau gets miffed when Lance pushes to the front of the gate first (they both come running over to be in).

So Im wondering if the big bust up they had, leaving one lame and one wounded, was over the field pecking order, or because they are jealous of eachother.

Beau literally goes in a mood if I bring Lance in first, he will turn away and just be generally huffy!

They used to be best of friends until this fight, as you can probably see in my siggy pics.

So those of you with more than one horse, or who look after more than one, do you have any of these problems? and do theylike eachother!

i have the same probs with my 2, they were fine for 4 and a half years until my youngster who was a colt decided to stamp his authority!! this ended with my retired racehorse being left bitten and kicked to pieces with his rug ripped off him! i've now had my youngster gelded but my old lad wont have anything to do with him in the field, if he goes near him he squeals and gallops off!! he's fine out of the field but they stand at opposite ends when they are out together, they dont mind who comes in first but if they are both at the gate i have o bring my youngster in first or he bites when you have the headcollar on my old lad!

i just accept now that they arnt going to be as close again!!

pickle and henry started off with henry as the top dog, then they had a few little fights with a few very minor little bites. Then pickle was on top, they both have there moments though, most the time though they are pretty good together.

One thing that proves they definetly like each other is there is an evil little pony kicks etc in the next field. He started jumping the fences into our fields. Pickle immediatly made it clear he was the boss so [****] pony decided to aim at henry. So pickle chased him away and always protects henry bless them

My new horse took over as top dog and ws quite agressive towards the others, suprising as she is so much younger than the others. My Two ponies always got on well, although Flicka was allways the boss, she would posture but rarely cary out her threats, she would seem very put out if she wasnt centre of attention.

We have a companion gelding pony - no one liked him to start with, but then he is a butt head and very rude. 9 months later the girls now tolerate him and will even engage in grooming. 4 months on the new youngetsr is still top dog but is not so agressive towars the others. I think she was like it to start with due to insecurity.

My two arabs (mare and gelding) are like two peas in a pod, where one goes the other one follows.

However i can't turn anything out with them. My gelding is so protective of my mare he can't stand something else in the field so my poor tb mare has to go out on her own. I feel a bit guilty but to be honest I just can't risk it. My tb got in with him a few weeks ago, he kicked her and she was on box rest for two weeks with a suspected fractured splint bone (thank god it wasn't broken). In fact he is so bad I can't have them tied up on the yard together in case he gets loose and kicks her.

My one saving grace is I have a double stable with a 1/2 wall so my two mares can touch and groom each other when they are in, or bicker if the mood takes them!

Fortunately, they all seem happy with the field arrangenments!

Margje looks after llewyn he's only 2. She wont let the mares come near him & every now & then he's allowed to go off & play with the others. I think that she thinks he's her baby. As you can see in my siggy she's close to him & she was keeping a watchful eye on me then making sure i dont get to close to him

It really fascinates me the relationships between them all.

Lance was a stallion until late, and when he was younger he was EXTREMELY nasty to other horses, he would beat the crap out of any new horse, or any horse that looked at himt he wrong way, he has only chilled out in his later years.

I think Beau being young, big and feisty is perhaps rekindling Lance's dark side!

my 12.2 pony shares a field with a 16.3 warmblood x and a 15.3 cob and an older horse. he stamped his authority on the 16.3 by refusing to be picked up and thrown by him (which is what the said horse does to little ponies!) and now they are best friends! he gets sheltered from him in the rain, they share hugs and when another horse was put in their field who chased wonka round trying to get him, Fred stood up for him! they are like a comedy act together sometimes; can;t walk for laughing at them!

Sunny hated Pidge when I first got him, but now they are inseperable. They do play a lot and are quite rough, small nicks on each others head and neck but touch wood nothing too serious. Sunny is definately in charge though despite being a lot smaller than Pidge
tongue.gif
so much so that Pidge won't trot past Sunny if we go out hacking

Horses can definitely get jealous. My old horse used to charge across the field to attack my loan one, after happily living with him for 3 years previously

As for current horses, Chloe doesn't do friends and is top mare in the field due to her face pulling talents. Meg is everyone's friend, and has forced Chloe to tolerate her. Meg is the only mare in the field who doesn't get kicked or bitten when within 3 ft of Chloe (*disclaimer - Chloe rarely makes contact as it's too much effort to lift her legs that high

*).
I can bring Meg in without Chloe bothering, but not the other way round.

I originally thought that my 2 hated each other as many years ago, when Muffin came back from her loan home, she pinned James in a corner and fractured his hock (she's 13.1 and he's 15.3!). Obviously they have not shared a field since.

After a while though we worked out they were jealous of each other. One couldn't stand the other being with me. So we had to make a rule that Mum dealt with her and I dealt with him, and her attitude changed completely.

My pony is now on loan at the same yard and they are fine with each other, to the point that when we moved them to two new stables in a different part of the yard the pony would waffle at the big fella for reassurance and calls if hes not out in the field (they are next door to each other).

Hate each other in field and have to live in seperate fields. Like each other out hacking. Madly in love at shows ,to the point that we can't take them both and if they both qualify for the RC champs they will have to go in seperate horseboxes and live at seperate ends of show ground! At qualifier one is in the novice and one in the open so we will have to make seperate journeys

Mira is out with 2 alpha females, and they are mean! They hog that water bucket and if Mira tries to get a drink Riverdance will deliberately kick the bucket over.

Carerra had been out with her boyfriend, who used to be a stallion. They are both in their teens and spent their day playfighting like foals. If she comes back from the stud in foal, I'm not sure she should be back out playing rough??

Our lot are ever so funny!
For the last couple of years it was just my WB mare and my arab gelding, who are totally devoted to each other, well, more her than him to be fair! He is quite an independant chap, but she is quite clingy, loves other horses but is usually boss in a field without being aggressive or anything, when I've kept her in larger herd she just swans in and takes over!
Did try a couple of other horses with the two of them over the years, geldings were a nightmare as they always picked on my lad and he got kicked once so I banned geldings! Mares were OK but just got ignored by the pair of them usually.
Then we got OH's mare, who is considerably bigger than my 2! Initially they pushed her to the bottom of the pecking order and ignored her mostly, particularly my lad. Then they had a bit of a scuffle, she got backed into a corner, kicked out (mostly in defence!) and by pure fluke took Tia's chestnut right off. It must have been pretty sore because after that Tia became scared of Millie, avoided her totally for a while. Now though, they are friends, but M is def in charge. However, J seems to be refusing to accept this new order, so whilst Tia still pushes him around, he still pushes Mills, and Mills pushes Tia! So around feeding/haying time they go from bowl to bowl in a little circle! (good job they all eat the same!)
And then, we took J and M away together for the weekend, and despite the fact that at home he niggles and nips and bullies her, once away, he decided he was in love with her and yelled for her the whole time the were seperated!
Honestly, horses!
But really, they do all get on now, they hang out in a little trio, all groom each other, all lie down for a kip together, and the worst that goes on is a bit of ears back and face pulling!

Fudge loves Lady and is very protective over her, mind you he loves anything smaller thats a mare as he used to belong to a Welsh section A dealer, actually he pretty much likes everyone. Lady quite likes Fudge but not as much as he likes her
laugh.gif
She does pull faces when he climbs all over her but thats about it.

My 2 horses are both easy going and generally get on with anything else.

However my older horse who I have had 4.5 years now is incredibly jealous of my 3yo who I have owned for over a year. The older one can be absolutely vile to him, if they are both loose in the field and I am in there then the 3yo isn't allowed anywhere near me, the poor begger gets chased off by J who then turns sweetly round to me with his ears pricked!

However when I am not there or if anyone else does them they are absolutely fine together!

Boo and Joey are best friends. However Boo is in season atm so she is obsessing over Rocco, but normally she'd boot him square in the face!
Shadow loves Rocco, Rocco quite likes Shadow too.
Boo and Shadow like each other most of the time.
Shadow hates Joey, Rocco hates Joey, Trixie hates Joey.
Joey hates Trixie.
The rest just ignore Trixie as she's pretty quiet and doesent cause any problems. Lol.

They love each other! I did get Munchkin (shetland) to keep Mo company though so it's just as well.Though there is some jealous squabbling when I'm around.

Mo is very bossy but he doesn't get far with Munchkin who is perfectly good at looking after himself!

My two are half sisters and there is defo a lot of sibling rivalry going on! They throw strops and pull faces at each other if one gets fed before the other or if i give one more attention the other huffs with me!
It's really funny as there is 2 years between them and they grew up together until they were seperated when the older one was taken away to be broken but four years later when they met up again they knew each other straight away! It was very sweet until the competion started beween them. I have never grazed them together since just in case but they are both happy to go out with other horses!

Is that a mare thing P_G!!

As mine are the same Spider does NOT tolerate any horse near her space! Yet loves our company and Cruz is exactly the same! I have had to hang up rugs so they cant see each other in the stable as they were flying at each other!!

2 of mine are best pals but they also have their moments. Its a love / hate relationship I think. Today I watched them groom each other for 10 minutes then "the boss" bit him hard on the knee and told him to p*ss off! Charming...... but they do love each other really. They love playing and sleeping right beside each other. So cute.

Mat hates all horses but gets upset when they are taken away from him, the problem with him is he MUST be boss. He is forever trying to bite the other two.

Lady gets on ok with mat as she now knows her place, but after buying Billy back 2 weeks ago she HATES him, she doesnt let him near me if she can help it, because i am hers!
And hes not allowed near Mat because.......yes youve guessed it.....he's hers too.

Billy has always been a nippy pony with other horses, think that is to do with being cut late, but he does try to get on with them, but has learnt to keep well away!!!

Well the three in our field Bean (mine), Rob (my friend's BFG) and Tegan (same friend's welshie).
Rob absoloutely adores Bean but adores both girls when they are in season.
Tegan is just playful and kicks them for fun (

) particularly at meal times.
Bean loves everyone when shes in season but hates them at other times

mine cant be grazed together as otto is vile to meg who is stupid enough to keep coming back for more. they are stabled next to each other and constantly fight over the wall. they will stand on the yard and at the lorry together with no problems at all and if you take one away from the other at a show then tantrums will be had! last time meg was in season and tied outside her box she was tarting it with the BFG neighbour the other side who was in his element, then she decided to give otto a go ..he ran to the stable door bit her arse and disappeared to the back of his stable!

Mine only met for the first time this lunchtime. They were on separate yards but are now in adjacent boxes on the same yard. My WB is usually nowhere to be seen because he hides in the dark recesses of his stable munching his hay but today all I could see was his face staring at me over the stable door balefully. He thought he had got one over on the new boy when I gave him a carrot but then he realised that the new boy had got one too and he wasn't impressed. He is a very jealous horse and will drive off any other horse who comes near me when I go into the field.

We have 6 horses split between 3 fields as mine bullies, so is out with a pony who he gets on with, as he always gcomes off injured. The mare and B get clingy, and they're all fat so smallish fields. New horse and B get on and smallest ponio is now with them as he for some reason left the field he and the mare shared leaving her with one pony.
So in a nutshell? NO!
lol
