Due to the god awful amount of rain and mud we are currently battling, our herd of eight have been split up into their own paddocks. One herd of four, with two bolshy youngsters, a pair of younger mares and my 2 oldies. I say oldies, brat pony is 22 and cob is 20. I'm lucky in that my 2 are best friends and they seem very content having their own space, bumbling along together in their paddock and going into a seperate night paddock for hay. In the summer, when all 8 of them together there were occasions when one of the bolshy horses, who ALWAYS has to play and charge around, clearly drove my 2 mad. They just wanted to eat, have a nap and potter around without being nipped, pushed around (despite cob being boss) and be left alone. They aren't the type who like to charge around, only the odd hoon about when they feel fresh:rolleyes:

They are clearly enjoying a quiet life without being pestered so what do your oldies prefer? The quiet life or do they enjoy being part of the action with the young'uns?:D

No idea! we have 5 and 3 of these are over 20 (28,26 and 21). The 26 yo is boss pony, the 21 yo is 2nd in command and the 28yo (weedy TB) is lowest ranking of all 5.

The other two are 12 and 3 and when we got the 3yo at 25mths his first buddy was the now 28 yo as he was never going to be horrid to him. The 3 yo now though likes to chase and bully the 28 yo yet I actually think they're still pretty good mates and will graze together etc.

The 12 yo and 3 yo will play silly games (rearing/boxing at each other etc). However, the boss pony lets the 3yo get away with murder and even lets him share (actually steal!) his food. That is something he would NEVER let anyone else do. He will also sometimes even have a little play with him.

All in all I guess they all get on pretty well and I suppose they have enough space in their field to get out of the way of each other. The boss pony though will let EVERYONE know in no uncertain terms if he has had enough of any stupid behaviour thougH!

I was given my horse when he was twenty and I had him until he was twenty-eight!
He was the liveliest horse I have ever ridden (used to jog everywhere sideways) just fed him on chaff and vitamins- couldnt feed him on veteran food it used to make him worse!

He was ridden or long-reined 3/4x per week for 20/40 mins and loved it
it gave him a job which he loved and he got bored without it

My 36 year old, 23 year old and 8 year old share a field and have done for 5 years.

It has always been the oldie and the younster who gallop around, explore and play. The middle one just watches.

If anyone is going to sneak past us at bring in and explore the YOs garden it will be the oldie.

So no he doesn't like a quiet life.

He still loves to go out for a hack if he is allowed, trouble is making him go slow enough :D

My 17 yo (shes an old 17) likes strolling around, grazing and gazing at the scenery. Saying that occasionally she gets the devil in her and spends the day bullying the youngsters. (My youngsters at 14 and 5 :D:D)

My old retired WB was most happiest out with an old mare where I used to keep them. Sadly she was pts and I've since moved yards and now keep my two boys together. He's happy with my now 7 yr old...but not like he was being oldies together with his old mare, bless him.
