Dodgy rescue centre - what can you do?

Yes any knowledgeable horse owner should know these things and most certainly those who proclaim to 'rescue' horses. But this place has no end of issues from what I found out (the fb site was blocked after I raised the issue). Up until the council got involved a few months back they had NO fire precautions/safety measures, despite numerous children/MOP's being present daily and hay/straw being present. They have NO insurance, despite said children riding any horse they wish to ride (as seen on the fb site), and they don't quarantine any horses on arrival (despite continuously taking in horses even for people who just currently cannot afford but then collect them again in a few months).

Ah, would that be after years of reported concerns by the public, before they finally took any action???????

Well in that case why didn't anyone have the initiative to call one of the other welfare agencies?!!!! I'm pretty sure somebody did at some point?!!
 
And secondly, the RSPCA ARE the only ones who will prosecute where needed so I'm afraid we are stuck with them if we want any more than just advice giving and no more.

The BHS and WHW were quite heavily involved with complaints received and and initial investigations being made. But were unable to take further action until the RSPCA became more officially involved.
 
I would call WHW first, they will involve RSPCA if further action is needed as amymay says, but importantly they are far more likely to come in the first place than the RSPCA.
 
put in the 'rescues' name to a search engine and other forum threads will come up. People have been concerned! What rescue place then sells on horses it has acquired? Sounds like a low dealing yard to me .I d hope authorities help out , but sadly there are plenty of uncaring and ignorant folk around, and they ll always find some way of trading horses
 
to be honest i am a bit disappointed. BHS very interested and took lots of information. The WHW, they said that a lot of things are down to the owner and what they term as right and wrong and there is not a lot that they can do about it. as its a rescue centre there will be horses there in a bad way and the public may misunderstand that to be not looked after. I actually don't hold out much hope and it seemed a little pointless and disheartening at the end of the conversation. they said they will visit and let me know the outcome. we will see.

Phone the WHW back, and demand to speak to someone else. At the end of the day you are only speaking to a phone 'monkey' it is not their place to comment or make a decision on what calls get logged.
 
When I reported someone for having a field full of starving horses the RSPCA not bothered, WHW said they were too far away but BHS Welfare Officer came out and saw the owner and then gave a report afterwards.
 
OP you do have to realise that nothing is likely to happen quickly . Every thing I have read leads me to think these problems are ongoing it's not simple in this type of situation especially if the owner of the horses wont accept there's anything wrong.
As I said in my earlier post I have no personal knowledge of this situation but people will be trying to do things to help.
 
i appreciate that. all i mean is it seems that maybe there is just very little that they are legally aloud to actually do in these situations which just seems a little poor in my opinion and a shame for the animals. you just wonder if this is a 'rescue centre' would they rather have not been rescued at all. i don't know enough to answer that.
 
I think you are to be commended for your concern - even if WHW sounded a bit negative, they are at leastsending someone out to check the place.

Let's hope something is eventually done for these poor horses.
 
Anyone can set up a rescue and some are better than others and others are total scams and some are started by people who IMO have mental health problems.
It's extremely frustrating when you are involved not to be able to for a horse as an individual what you would like and it was one of the things that lead me to stop doing what I was doing in the sector.
But it's a hard sad fact that all over this country there are horses just about existing while down the road there are luckier horses being well cared for in homes.its just not fair but it's the way it is.
 
contact your local council as this lady 'leases' horses therefore is a riding school.

well done for reporting it though. If anyone else is in the area and seen the goings on (if they havent then maybe they could drive past and look?) perhaps they could report it too?

OP you say you are not knowledgeable about horses but the comment above is probably very perceptive, what are they being rescued from are they better off alive, uncared for or a quick end with no more suffering, its a tough one but I know that something that is dead no longer suffers.

The local council are investigating this place as it is breaking licensing regs so it may be worth pestering them also.

I think from past posts the council have already been involved.
 
OP get photos if you can and telephone both the BHS and WHW again and ask for email addresses to send them to. If they see photographic evidence of what you are trying to explain then it will further your progress on this. Remember to date all photos and videos that are made. If you have the date/time stamp on your camera or phone use it. Otherwise make sure you keep a clear record of the dates and times you took the photos. Keep a diary too and record any observations that you see.
