Does a dog get its height from its mum or it's dad?

Is there a general rule of thumb or is it just up in the air.

I am looking at puppy .... Is there any hints on seeing what size it may be?

Studying the pedigree can give a guide as can experience with individual strains within breeds.
For a BYB pedigree or a crossbreed anything goes.

What Sugar said. There is no guarantee, my purebred dog is from two small parents, he is small but his litter brother is a horse.

My boy is from two reasonably small parents too and he is massive, freak of the litter! He was double the size of all the other pups. My bitch on the other hand is tiny and definitely takes after her Mum.
