...if it isn't on the National Equine Database? Saw a pony advertised but can't find it on NED. How does that happen?

I think NED is a voluntary thing so yes, it is perfectly possible for a horse to not be on it. It has nothing to do with agencies that issue horse passports.

The owners need to associate the pony or horse with NED, it is optional and in this case has not been done. It will need a passport to be sold though.

My pony isn't on NED simply because she's foreign! Imported horses aren't on NED unless the owner specifically asks to put them on there (and has to pay I believe?).

I've never associated any of mine with NED, I've always assumed the PIO did that, because all of them have been on the database.

I thought all horses were put on NED, the passport companies send the horses details to them.

My horse wasn't on there for a while though, so it may just be a case of the PIO not having sent the details yet...

Did you search just the name or did you have the passport number? Could be registered under a stable name?

I searched the advertised name, which I presume would be the one on the passport, as it had a stud prefix.
